Sixteen-year-old Sofia Samodurova completed a European Championship debut to remember by sealing the ladies free skate title in Minsk. The Russian youngster held off the challenge of reigning champion Alina Zagitova to deny her compatriot the chance of clinching back-to-back European titles. The Krasnoyarsk-born skater sat second in the standings after the short programme, but Samodurova dazzled in the free skate competition to cash in a score of 140.96. A total score of 213.84 proved enough to take the title as Olympic champion Zagitova's free skate routine could only clinch fourth spot to finish eight points behind the overall winner. Finland's Viveca Lindfors completed the podium line-up with a total score of 194.40 to earn a first European Championship medal.

Javier Fernandez ended an illustrious figure skating career with his seventh consecutive European title Saturday after Russian rival Mikhail Kolyada floundered in the free skate. Fernandez had been third after Thursday's short program but stormed into the lead with two quadruple jumps and 179.75 points in the free skate for a total of 271.59. He had barely competed or trained since winning bronze at last year's Olympics, as he prepares to retire from competitive skating to focus on commercial ice shows. "I've not been able to train for so long and to take a long break since Olympics, that was quite complicated, and knowing that it was going to be my last competition, so I think those three things are the hardest things," he said.
