Alysa Liu jumped from fifth in the short program to third overall with one of the best performances of her life. At her first senior-level worlds, Liu earned the first U.S. women’s world medal in six years with a 211.19 total. After enduring a roller-coaster span of less than three months that included testing positive for Covid and having to withdraw halfway through the U.S. Championships, making her long-awaited Olympic debut at age 16, facing public scrutiny after it was revealed last week that Chinese men had stalked and harassed her father allegedly on behalf of the Chinese government, then making her senior worlds debut, Liu ended her impressive free skate with tears and a clear release of emotions and heavy life experiences. “I’m so tired,” she said as she left the ice. U.S. Olympic teammate Mariah Bell finished fourth, falling from third in the short program. She was still all smiles at the end of her mostly clean “Hallelujah” program in which she fought for every element. “I’m proud that I got fourth,” Bell said. “I could’ve been any place below fourth. Obviously I was close to a medal and I had the potential to do it, I just got a little tentative on the last few jumps, but I’m really happy for Alysa and that we got an American woman on the podium; I think that’s awesome.”

Bay Area figure skaters Alysa Liu and Vincent Zhou helped Team USA take home several medals during the World Figure Skating Championship in France. Here's a look at how each figure skater performed to earn a medal. Liu, who was fifth after her short program, finished with 211.19 points to earn a bronze medal in the women's free skate. "I didn’t think I could do better than the Olympics," Liu said in a report published on TeamUSA.org. "It’s going to be hard to do it at worlds so soon after. It’s crazy. I’m so happy. … I still can’t believe it. What just happened?" It is the first world medal for a U.S. woman since Ashley Wagner’s silver in 2016. Kaori Sakamoto of Japan built on her big lead following her short program to win the world title.

Alysa Liu, the 16-year-old two-time national champion, also took home a bronze medal in the women’s championship with a score of 211.19. Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto won the gold medal while Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx took home the silver medal.
Liu, who placed 7th at the Olympics after having to withdraw from the 2021 National Championships due to her positive COVID test, said after her performance: “I didn’t think I could do better than the Olympics. It’s going to be hard to do it at worlds so soon after. It’s crazy. I trained really hard for the little time I had, and it really paid off, and I'm so happy.”
“I am very speechless,” she added. “I came into this competition not thinking about medals, even during the competition. I just wanted to do good programs for myself. So when I saw that I medaled, I was like, 'What?!' I didn't believe it. I'm still in shock.”
In the Ice Dance competition, Madison Chock and Evan Bates took home their third career World medal, earning the bronze with a total score of 216.83, right behind fellow Team USA members Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue.
“That was our best performance of the entire season,” Chock said afterwards. “It’s incredible to finish the season with two amazing performances that we’re super proud of. We couldn’t be happier.”
