Rika Kihira of Japan landed a triple axel in a beautiful free skate to win the women’s title Friday night at the Four Continents figure skating championships, while American top hope Bradie Tennell slid from first to fifth after the judges penalized her for under-rotating four of her jumps and for reducing a planned triple lutz-triple loop combination jump into a triple-single combination. Kihira, a skater with lovely flow, finished with 221.99 points. The surprise runnerup was Elizabet Tursynbaeva of Kazakhstan, with 207.46. Mai Mihara of Japan was third, ahead of compatriot and defending event champion Kaori Sakamoto. Mariah Bell, who fell on her second jump, was sixth and Ting Cui of Baltimore fell three times and was 11th. Tennell, who finished second at the recent U.S. championships, was disappointed with her mistakes. “It seems I only mess up my lutzes during competition, so I’m really frustrated,” she said. “I have no words because it’s so frustrating.” The women’s finale capped a day at Honda Center that featured higher quality skating than the Ducks have recently produced on their home ice.

Shoma Uno performed a world record-breaking free skate on Saturday to win the men's competition at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. Uno, who finished fourth in Thursday's short program, blew away the competition at the Honda Center in Anaheim with an overall score of 289.12. His free skate to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" featured three quads, two toe loops and a flip, earning a record 197.36 from the judges. "I told myself that I could do it and skated without thinking about anything," the 21-year-old Pyeongchang silver medalist said. "As soon as the free skate ended, I didn't feel happy, I just felt that I had seen it through to the end. I thought it was crucial to just not give up." China's Jin Boyang, who beat Uno for gold at last year's Four Continents, finished second with 273.51, while American Vincent Zhou fell from first to third with 272.22. Among other Japanese skaters, Keiji Tanaka was seventh and Kazuki Tomono finished 12th. Uno's score surpassed the previous high of 190.43 recorded by compatriot Yuzuru Hanyu on Nov. 4 in the ISU Grand Prix's Helsinki competition. Scores from this season alone and onward count toward world records, following the ISU's revision of its scoring system last July.

USA’s Madison Chock and Evan Bates took gold in the the Ice Dance at the 2019 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships on Sunday afternoon, while teammates Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue slid to fourth place. Canadian champions Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje won the silver, while teammates Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earned the bronze. Chock and Bates delivered a playful and crowd-pleasing routine to “Fever” and “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley, showcasing level 4 twizzles and lifts. The diagonal steps were graded a level 3 as was Chock’s one-step footwork. They received high grades of execution (GOE) on all elements to finish first in the free dance and overall (126.25 / 207.42). “It feels incredible,” said Chock of their win. “We didn’t set any expectations as far as placement, because that’s not why we are skating. We have this new found joy and happiness when we are skating and we want to share that and that is our main goal this season. Every step was fun.” “We got a lot of medals, none of them are gold,” said Bates. I am surprised. If you had told us that we would win Four Continents when we pulled out of the Grand Prix for months ago, I think we would be very surprised. But we’re very happy now. This was our third competition in five weeks, so we felt a little bit nervous today just knowing that were were running on fumes a little bit.”
