Eugenie Bouchard’s comeback might very well be here. The former Wimbledon finalist’s strong ending to 2018 continued into the new year with another late run before bowing out to No. 2 seeded Julia Goerges 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Auckland Open on Friday. It’s the second consecutive tournament in which Bouchard made a deep run. She ended her season last year with an impressive semifinals run at the Luxembourg Open in October, which included a win against Carla Suarez-Navarro. Bouchard lost again to Goerges, who was the tournaments champion. Goerges, ranked No. 14 in the world, praised Bouchard following Friday’s three-set win, saying she thinks there’s more to come from the former No. 5 ranked Canadian.

With the 2019 tennis season having kicked off, Eugenie Bouchard, one of the game’s most popular players, is once again aiming be recognized for her abilities on the court. Having spent much of the past several seasons on the fringe of the WTA tour from a results perspective, the 24-year-old showed signs this week in Auckland, New Zealand, of continuing her late surge from last year that put her back among the Top 100. Several years ago, it appeared that struggles would be few and far between, and that Bouchard would continue to have a firm foothold among the game’s best. The young Canadian ended 2014 as the WTA’s Most Improved Player after a stellar campaign that saw her reach the Top 10 for the first time. Her year started off with an unexpected run to the Australian Open semifinals, the first time she advanced to the second week of a major and only a year after she fell in the second round of qualifying for the tournament.

Bouchard was satisfied with her win over at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The Canadian player said: "It was a really tough match, I was happy that I got through it. I didn't have the best attitude for sure, the coach is p....d about that, so that's something I'm going to work on going forward." Her coach Michael Joyce had told her: "No, the clear problem, Genie, the clear problem is your attitude. The only reason you won these last two was that you buckled down and you fought hard, focused and won the set. This is the first match I've seen you play, where I've been here, where your attitude is f..ked up." Bouchard replied back: "Every single point that you lose it's because, I mean, she hasn't won a point barely. OK, there's a problem, I can't finish the point, that's the problem. Are you referring to when he said my attitude was f....d up? I need to be called out when I'm not doing the right thing on court and a bad attitude doesn't help me play better that's for sure, it actually helps me play worse.

Bouchard also puts herself in the spotlight, as she did with the famous dinner date with a random Twitter fan, after losing a Super Bowl bet, which created headlines across the globe.
Bouchard enjoys the process, and has a natural sense of humour that suits the medium, but admits it can be a double-edged sword.
“It’s definitely crazy,” Bouchard told the Radio Sport Breakfast. “We are scrutinised on a whole other level. Fans have access to us; they can essentially write to us their unfiltered thoughts.”

Eugenie Bouchard, the top Canadian lady player was ranked in the top 5 and had a popping tennis game that propelled her even into the final of Wimbledon four years ago. But things have changed with her accident at the U.S. Open five years ago, a slow recovery and lawsuit resolved, her tennis abilities took a very bad hit and her rankings are now in the 80s. This tennis slump would be a depressing situation for many players, but Bouchard is active on the social media and from her maintained popularity sport and entertainment venues. Outside of the tennis circular, she likes basketball as well as football where a year ago had a bet with her Twitter fan, John Goehrke, that if the Patriots won over the Atlanta Falcons, she'd go on a date with him. They had a few dates that later their relationship fizzled.
