KJ Apa is still processing Luke Perry's death. In an interview with MR PORTER’s The Journal, the 22-year-old actor opens up about losing Perry, who died last year after a stroke. Perry played Apa's father on Riverdale. "Last year was probably the hardest year of my life," Apa says. "It made me really think, 'What kind of man do I want to be?' And I’m still figuring it out." Perry's death "changed everything" for Apa, who says that he "had never gone through anything like that before." "I’ve never lost anyone close to me, so it was a really hard time. It’s still hard," he admits. "Going to work, I can just feel that he’s not there any more." Apa goes on to recall the "really, really, really good relationship" he had with Perry. "He was just kind of a guy that kept us, especially me, grounded because he’d been through all of this stuff," he explains. "I was so blessed to have him in my life to say, 'Maybe don’t do that,' or, 'This is a good idea.' Just giving me advice."

David Arquette has opened up about his friendship with late actor Luke Perry. The Scream actor, having just released his new documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette about his experience in the world of professional wrestling, told NME why the film is dedicated to the Riverdale actor who passed away last year. The film sees Arquette spending time with Jack, Perry’s son, in the ring. “It was really super important,” Arquette said. “Wrestling bringing me together with Luke before the end of his life was just a timing thing – and that’s what’s most meaningful to me in the experience.” Speaking about the actor’s death, Arquette detailed how close the pair were. “It was such a huge thing for our whole family, because we consider them part of the family,” he explained. “Just seeing how his family dealt with it was really incredible. Jack and Sophie, his kids, dealt with it with such dignity so of course we wanted to dedicate the film to him.” Arquette also recalled how far back his friendship with Perry goes, explaining how the actor lived with his mother decades ago. “He lived in our house when he got cast in 90210, renting a room from my mother,” Arquette revealed.

In a Thursday interview on the podcast Hustling with Vivica A. Fox, he spoke about being on a flight with his phone off when news broke that his Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star and friend suffered a massive stroke, getting the shock of his life when the plane touched down. He also talked about Perry having an advance directive, spelling out his decisions about end-of-life care, including being buried in an eco-friendly mushroom suit. “I was on a plane heading to Wilmington, North Carolina, when he had a stroke,” Ziering recalled. “When the plane touched down and my phone came to life, it blew up. I was like: ‘What the heck is going on?’” It was then, while “walking off the jet bridge,” that he learned his pal had a massive stroke, and by the time he was inside the airport, “people who I don’t even known were coming up to me: ‘Hey, I just heard about Luke.’ It was so surreal... I was behind the curve... Everyone had already known... It was like being hammered. I went over to where there was a Chick-fil-A and I just had to catch my breath.” Ziering tried reaching out to the Riverdale star, but, “I wasn’t able to talk to him — obviously. I wasn’t able to get in touch with the family. Then four days later he was gone.”
