THIS is the dramatic moment a figure skater slashes her rival during a warm up sparking accusations she was trying to injure her ahead of a major competition. American Mariah Bell, 22, sliced the calf of South Korean Lim Eun-soo, 16, on Wednesday night before they were due to skate in Saitama, Japan. Footage shows Bell skating up behind Lim before performing a pirouette then apparently slashing Lim's leg using her extended foot. Lim instantly crumples up in pain as Bell skates away as though nothing has happened. The incident is reminiscent of the infamous episode at the 1994 Winter Games when Tonya Harding was accused of hiring someone to injure her rival Nancy Kerrigan. After a practice session, Kerrigan was attacked in a corridor by Shane Stant, who had been contracted to break the skater's right leg. A representative from Lim's South Korean sports Agency, All That Sports, claimed the incident was premeditated.

Mariah Bell is an American figure skater who this week became headline news because of allegations she attempted to deliberately injure one of her main rivals, Lim Eun-soo. Bell was accused by her South Korean rival of cutting her with her skate during a warm-up at the World Championships in Japan. Footage from the rink shows Bell skating up to Lim from behind before gliding past with her leg stretched out; Lim’s team say the US skater cut 16-year-old’s leg with her skate as she passed, injuring the athlete before competition. Lim later competed with her leg bandaged but despite that, managed to secure a personal best score and placed 5th, one spot ahead of 22-year-old Bell. The accusation comes after months of claims that Bell has been bullying her long-time rival. Both skaters are coached by Rafael Arutyunyan who says the rumours of bullying between the girls are false, as are the accusations that Bell intentional harmed Lim. “The fact is that Mariah has a movement in this place of the program, which she very much pulls back her leg and pulls her out,” he said of the incident. “So, it turned out that she slightly struck the skate blade on Lim. Of course, it was not intentional. “There were no disagreements between these athletes in the training session at all. I didn’t even see Mariah. “Was this girl capable of offending anyone? I don’t imagine who would even think of writing this.”

ISU: there is no evidence that Bell intended to injure Einsou Lim at the World Cup
- Would you say that conflicts between athletes in training are not uncommon? - You see, what's the matter, in figure skating there are a number of unwritten rules. A person who rolls the program is equal to an ambulance, a fire engine or a police car, which is carried on a mission with a flashing light. Such a machine can carry everything in its path, and no one has the right to condemn it.
The second such unwritten law says: if the athlete comes to the jump, it can not be shot down. This means that the rest, those who at this moment take steps or rotations, must leave the road and allow the person to jump. I, at least, teach this to my athletes from the very beginning, as soon as I start working with them. But a skater with his coach, for example, comes from somewhere in Taiwan, and both of them do not know anything about these unwritten laws.
A person can calmly stop in the middle of the rink, bring an athlete to him and start giving him some explanation. In such cases, I usually ask: "Are you in the middle of the highway too, can you stop to discuss your affairs with someone? No? Why? Afraid that they will shoot you? Well, is it not better here to go back to the board and talk to the athlete there to not knocked down? "
The same with Michal Brzezina, when he came to my group, also got under my feet for the first six months. And now he teaches others the right behavior. This does not always happen smoothly, but the athletes are the least to blame - they simply did not learn to behave properly on the ice. By the way, have you ever paid attention to the fact that the runners' trajectories of athletes are always adjusted to millimeters? They often fall into their own tracks - Yuzuru just fell in Saitama from a loop during one of the training sessions. Also, at one of the world championships, Mao (Assad) fell, and drove into her own track, jumping from the loop. It is to me that, at that ill-fated training session in Saitama, Mariah, in the same way, skated backwards in her trajectory, stretching her leg backwards. And on her way was Lim, who also rocked to meet her.

U.S. figure skater Mariah Bell has had it up to here with the haters blaming her for South Korean rival Lim Eun-soo's injury. During a warm-up at the World Championships last week, Bell, 22, skated past the 16-year-old, made contact and left her with a slashed leg. Lim received medical attention and was able to compete while wearing a bandage. She finished fifth, while Bell came in sixth. The International Skating Union (ISU) ruled that the incident, which brought back memories of the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan feudin the '90s, was an accident. "As I told Eunsoo in Japan, the incident at practice was very unfortunate and I meant absolutely no harm (sic)," Bell wrote on Instagram on Thursday. "Our training environment is professional and supportive, and I've never changed locker rooms or training times or anything like that." "The comments that my friends, family and I received on social media were hateful and disturbing and hopefully this situation raises awareness and causes people to think twice before hitting 'tweet' or 'post,'" she said. Bell added, "I learned a lot about my inner strength last week, and I'm excited to continue to train in the lead up to Beijing in 2022."

Figure skater Mariah Bell has spoken out for the first time after being accused of deliberately cutting the leg of a South Korean competitor with her skate, saying she meant "absolutely no harm." In an incident that conjured images of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, Bell, 22, was accused by the South Korean national team of deliberately slashing the leg of skater Lim Eun-soo, 16, with her skate during a warmup last week ahead of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Japan. http://instagram.com/p/BvPw-HOgm29 "Our training environment is professional and supportive, and I've never changed locker rooms or training times or anything like that,'' Bell wrote. Bell was in the middle of a practice session for her short program on March 20 when she clearly clipped Lim, according to video shot from the stands and obtained by NBC News. Lim can be seen reaching down to grab her leg in pain.
