Washington (CNN) US President Biden on the 10th considered canceling the indictment of Julian Assange, 52, the founder of the whistleblowing site WikiLeaks, following a request from Australia, the defendant's home country. It was revealed that he was doing so.
Australia's parliament passed a motion in February calling for Assange to be released to his home country.
Asked about Australia's request at the White House on the 10th, Mr. Biden replied, "We are considering it."
Assange has been held in a prison in the British capital London for the past five years. For seven years before that, he was holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK.

Regarding the defendant Julian Assange, who was charged in the United States with crimes such as disclosing confidential information, the United States submitted a document to a British court guaranteeing that ``even if he is transferred to the United States, we will not seek the death penalty for him.'' This was reported by Reuters and others. The death penalty has been abolished in the UK.
The United States has requested the extradition of Assange to the British side. In March, the British High Court asked the U.S. government to give assurances that the defendant would not receive the death penalty. The guarantee document was reportedly submitted to the British side by the 16th of this month.
In February, the parliament of Assange's home country of Australia passed a motion calling for his release and return to Australia. In response to these voices, US President Biden said on the 10th of this month that he was "considering" dropping the charges.
From 2010 to 2011, Assange published classified US documents related to the Iraq War and other matters on WikiLeaks. U.S. authorities charged him with 18 charges, including disclosure of classified information and violation of the Espionage Act. He was arrested by British authorities in 2019 and subsequently extradited to the United States. However, the defendant appealed the decision and the transfer was stopped.
