Bryan Hearns is no newbie to designing for celebs. The FIDM University alumnus stayed in Los Angeles after graduating in 2010 and linked up with Style PR’s Antonio Estebán, who acquainted Hearns with the many names he works with today. From Keke Palmer to Kylie Jenner to Selena Gomez, the 26-year-old has had no shortage of it-girls to dress in his eclectic designs. The new year came with another challenge for Hearns: dressing Ariana Grande for her Dangerous Woman tour, which kicked off Thursday in Phoenix. Grande is no stranger to his work: She rocked Hearns' designs on Billboard's August 2014 cover and donned a custom top by him at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball. When Hearns was approached by Law Roach, Grande’s stylist, to develop her Dangerous Woman tour outfits, it was a match made in fashion heaven. Hearns discusses working with the pop star, his favorite look from the tour, and the difference between creating his beloved street style and designing performance wear.

That was 10 songs into a 90-minute set of a little more than 20 numbers. It was an odd decision to keep the band hidden behind the curtain for so long -- making much of Grande's act appear as if she was singing to pre-recorded tracks, just like those who opened for her. Still, it didn't seem to bother fans who were on their feet and dancing and having a great time as she and some 10 dancers made their grand entrance from below the stage and launched into "Be Alright" from last year's "Dangerous Woman'' album. An appropriate opening since this is the Dangerous Woman Tour. And honoring the tour's title, she sang all 11 songs from her third album, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard chart. Grande's band finally made their appearance during her performance of "Side by Side" off "Dangerous Woman." The stage came alive for the song as gym lockers were wheeled out on stage and Grande and others rode bikes similar to the steamy video for the song.

There are plenty of things to say about Ariana Grande that have nothing to do with her music. Her breakthrough rise in 2014. The jokes about her name sounding like a Starbucks drink. The Great Donut-licking Incident of 2015. A ponytail that won't shut up. It's easy to pass her off, and maybe not entirely unwarranted. It hasn't been long enough to gauge her staying power. She has what many of her peers don't have: a sense of show business. A watchable quality that appears effortless, natural and poised for domination. Grande might be the millennial Mariah Carey, as some critics have said, but she exudes a comfort with performing that Carey only slowly grew into. Grande doesn't have Carey's once-vocal prodigiousness, but she makes up for it in kindness and charm. Give her another couple albums and she'll be a powerhouse. Grande's "Dangerous Woman" tour, her second headlining arena tour in as many years, played to a rapturous KeyBank Center on Tuesday night. She hit all the high notes of a rising star.
