Astrid’s new single “Think Before I Talk,” due out tomorrow, is her first track in almost five years to feature recorded guitar riffs. Her enthusiasm about having guitar on the track is tangible—but it isn’t until she starts talking about her upcoming U.S. tour that she starts to really teem with excitement. She has a close relationship with her fans, and actively engages with them on social media. She’s been known to deliver pizza to fans who queue up for hours before her shows, and tries to answer every DM she receives on Twitter and Instagram. But the greatest happiness, she shared, is that her music has brought her fans together. “Some kids might not have friends or might feel left out, so to see my fans communicating with each other and feel included is really special.” There’s a faint suggestion in their that as a small girl from Rennebu, Astrid herself might have felt isolated or lonely before she discovered music. “It’s funny, I’m about to go on tour and I’m seeing my fans tweet that they are just as excited about meeting each other as they are about seeing me.” We are at the Grand Hotel Oslo, and Astrid did not have to take skis to get here. She’s moved to “the big city,” as she puts it (Oslo has about 600,000 residents, the size of Oklahoma City), and was able to walk over from her flat across town without incident. We are in a suite filled with racks upon racks of clothes from local designers showing in the Oslo Runway fashion shows this week, and she wearing a black kimono while a hairstylist blows out her blonde locks.

Everyone is dragging this particular Monday morning, except for Astrid, whose charisma and energy are infectious. She answers a few tweets from fans, records some Snapchat videos, and cracks quips with the photographer. “Maybe I should get a long black wig so people don’t recognize me on the street,” she pondered out loud. “Well, this is Norway, everyone is blonde, so maybe that would just make me stick out more!”

Of course, there are the big fashion weeks twice a year in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, but then there are the smaller cities with emerging talent that also want their voices heard on a main stage. Enter Oslo Runway, a 3-day smaller scale Fashion Week, with an equal magnitude of talent as its larger counterparts. As a Scandanavian newbie, a friend of mine enlisted singer songwriter Astrid S to show me the ropes. After making her debut on Norway's version of Pop Idol in 2013, it's no surprise she's risen to fame quickly, with nearly half a million Instagram followers in her back pocket. Her top singles "2AM" and "Breathe" have garnered major global attention, not to mention she's lent her vocals to other artists, including Katy Perry and Aviici ... casual. We met the evening I arrived, when I subtly crashed her W Magazine shoot at the Grand Oslo Hotel. Although she had been working since dawn, she greeted me with a big smile, and an even bigger hug. The next morning she arrived fresh-faced in a laid back streetwear look (she has the best collection of hoodies, seriously, check her Instagram)! "I’m influenced by so many different people. And I rarely think one person in particular has a great sense of style overall — if that makes sense. I’ll get inspired by an outfit from time to another. But lately, I’ve been looking at Sofia Richie on Instagram. She has good taste," she mentioned, while speaking about personal style. After a quick hair and make-up refresh, we were on our way. Ahead, check out our day together at Oslo Runway in an exclusive photo diary.

We’ve been pretty sweet on Astrid S ever since we popped “Think Before I Talk” on a V:Music playlist way back in the Summer 2017. Now the Norwegian alt-pop singer is ready for a stateside close-up two times over: On Wednesday night (February 27) she made her U.S. late-night television debut by performing her slinky hit “Someone New” on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and she’s about to hit the road this spring with Swedish singer and songwriter Zara Larsson.
Astrid S and Larsson team up their combined Nordic pop power for eight North American dates, and included in the run is a May 8 twirl at The Paradise Rock Club in Boston. Get tickets on Friday (March 1) after you’re done watching the Meyers clip.
