Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers is getting heat for a video she appeared in that's making the rounds online where she talks about other contestants' English speaking skills.
Miss Philippines was crowned Miss Universe on Monday in Bangkok after a trailblazing ceremony praised for featuring its first transgender candidate but marred by remarks about the English-speaking ability of two Asian contestants.
Catriona Gray, 24, finished first ahead of the South African and Venezuelan finalists in the glittering televised event hosted by American comic turned TV host Steve Harvey and supermodel Ashley Graham.
Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers, 24, made it to the round of 20 semi-finalists despite the much criticized remarks she made about Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie and Miss Cambodia Rern Sina caught on video.
The comments went viral but Summers later posted an apology on Instagram, saying she did not 'intend to hurt' her fellow competitors.
'In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize,' she wrote with image that appears to show her apology accepted by the other contestants.
Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers won a wildcard spot in the top 20 but failed to make the top 10 in the Miss Universe pageant. The 24-year-old Omaha, Nebraska native is a former Miss Nebraska Teen USA 2012 and Miss Nebraska USA 2018. Summers was the first woman from Nebraska to win the Miss USA crown and the 11th former Miss Teen USA to win the title.
Summers is a graduate of Texas Christian University, earning degrees in child development and strategic communication. Prior to winning the Miss USA crown, Summers worked as a certified child life specialist.
According to her Miss USA biography, Summers is “passionate about encouraging others to have a health relationship with food and fitness.”
“When not busy in scrubs, she can often be found in workout gear teaching Pilates or taking a dance party cycling class. From her personal experience finding a balance, watching her mother lose 75 pounds, supporting multiple friends as they struggled with anorexia and orthorexia and learning about the eating disorder inpatient unit during her clinical rotations, she is passionate about working closely with NEDA this year and plans to continue doing so,” her biography notes.
Earlier this week, Summers issued an apology after video footage was released when she appeared to make light of some of her fellow Miss Universe contestants’ failure to speak English. In the video, Summers described Miss Vietnam as “so cute,” adding she “pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she goes …” then making a smiling face and looking confused.
The 2018 Miss Universe competition took place on Sunday night and thankfully, the biggest news story to come out of this year’s event was not Steve Harvey announcing the wrong winner. Instead, it was viewers noticing that Miss Canada looked familiar. Like, biggest pop star in the world-familiar. Is it just us, or does Miss Canada look exactly like Taylor Swift?
Marta Magdalena Stepien from Windsor, Ontario was representing the true north strong and free during the 2018 Miss Universe competition when viewers noticed that the biomedical engineering technology student looks an awful lot like Taylor Swift. Whether you’re Stepien or Swift in this situation, it’s a pretty great comparison.
Stepien has been a model for ten years, traveling the world and working as a tourism ambassador in Japan. Her charitable plans include working to empower girls and women from “low-income, single-parent immigrant backgrounds” by creating free after-school programs that focus on STEM. So yeah, she’s also awesome like T Swift.
