The Dutch advance: Following a fairly evenly matched first half in which Italy squandered several good chances, the Netherlands completely outclassed their opponents in a second half in which Italy grew increasingly frustrated and gave away one free-kick after another. It was from two of these set-pieces that the winning goals came from, with Vivianne Miedema and Stefanie van der Gragt getting on the end of Sherida Spitse crosses to nod their country through to the last four. The Netherlands double their lead. Another free-kick in a dangerous area, another goal for the Dutch. Spitse was the provider drom the right wing and Stefanie van der Gragt rose highest to send an unstoppable bullet header past Giuliani. Well colour me psychic, the Netherlands have the lead! From the free-kick, taken by, Sherida Spitse, Vivianne Miedema steers a lovely glancing header inside the far post to score her 61st goal for her country.

Alex Morgan trolled England with a tea-drinking celebration after heading the USA back in front during a non-stop first half of their World Cup semi-final. Ellen White had drawn England level after Christen Press’s early goal, before Morgan struck just after the half hour mark. It was another header that found the back of the net for the Americans and Morgan’s celebration caught the eye. Morgan pretended to drink some tea with her pinky finger sticking out, a clear attempt to wind up some England supporters. The goal also equalled White’s goal tally for the tournament, with the England striker and Morgan leading the Golden Boot charge with six goals a piece so far. Preparations for the semi-final was dominated by accusations of spying, with two USA backroom staff members thrown out of the Lionesses’ hotel days before the game.

Lindahl was beaten again after Neville’s leading scorer, Ellen White, chested Beth Mead’s cross down, turned Linda Sembrant and lashed home but a VAR check ensued and that “goal” was disallowed after it was decided that the ball had been tamed by the suddenly incandescent striker’s arm. No wonder White looked so enraged, the ball appeared to bounce from chest to arm, making entirely inadvertent and non consequential contact with her hand before a superb, technically assured, finish. In those increasingly sepia tinged days before VAR it would have undoubtedly stood. Sometimes the law really is an ass. “I don’t know where the game’s going,” said Neville. “I really don’t.” Sweden though had dropped deep, their positioning and body language challenging England to get behind their defence. Although it took a terrific headed clearance off the line from Nilla Fischer to prevent extra time after Bronze swung a boot at the high velocity fallout from a corner, even a handful of typically clever Carney manoeuvres could not quite unhinge them. As England’s players slumped to the turf, Sweden celebrated bronze as if it really was gold. Ikea must surely stock a light which will perform the necessary alchemy in Gerhardsson’s home.
