“Old Town Road” is still the number one hit on the Billboard Top 100 chart and it has been for 12 straight weeks. Right below it is Taylor Swift’s song “You Need to Calm Down,” and when she previously debuted her song “ME!” it also landed in the number two spot on the chart. Much has been written about the massive success of “Old Town Road,” with a repeated emphasis on how the song is keeping other artists (Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, and Justin Bieber among them) but especially Swift’s songs from the top. The song has “prevented” Swift’s singles from reaching the number one spot and it’s “kept Taylor Swift out of the number one spot.” “If Taylor Swift can’t have a number one pop hit in 2019, can anyone?” Vanity Fair asks, which makes little sense. Someone already has the number one pop hit of 2019: Lil Nas X. The framing continually is that such a spot is not just home for Taylor Swift, but one she deserves even if her new songs aren’t great.

On Monday (July 29) -- the same day Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, officially became the longest-running Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single of all time -- Mariah Carey took to Twitter to congratulate the rapper for breaking her long-standing chart record. "Sending love & congrats to @lilnasx on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!" Carey tweeted, alongside an illustration of her literally passing the torch to Lil Nas X. "We've been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @boyziimen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!" Lil Nas X immediately responded to Carey with a message of his own. The rapper reposted her tweet on his Instagram, accompanied with the message "Legend" and a heart emoji. Between the remixes with Billy Ray Cyrus, BTS, Mason Ramsey, Young Thug and Diplo, have you had enough of "Old Town Road" yet? Lil Hank Williams and Miley Cyrus have not!
Cyrus recently posted a video of the duo singing the now record-breaking song (17 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100) backstage at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night (July 27).
As noted, Ramsey has his own remix with Young Thug and Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley's dad), in which he freshens up the original with his new comical verse line: "Hop up on my Razor / Got a thousand acres / Ride up on the cows with it / Pray that it don't phase her."
In her post, Cyrus also cracks a joke that she's gonna take Ramsey to the old town because "he can't drive yet."

During the "Old Town Road" remix, Billy Ray Cyrus sings about diamond rings and Fendi sports bras, but he admits he didn't have any idea what a Fendi sports bra was when he wrote the song. Had the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer gotten his way, another word would rhyme with "star," "guitar" and "car."
Cyrus and Johnny McGuire (formerly of Walker McGuire) recently stopped by Taste of Country Nights to talk about their collaboration "Chevys and Fords," found under McGuire's name on digital streaming platforms. The pair met thanks to Noah Cyrus before the '90s hitmaker had even heard of Lil Nas X, Tik Tok and "Old Town Road." Having a record-setting hitmaker on your solo debut is a pretty good marketing tool if you can do it.
Talking to ToC Nights host Evan Paul, Cyrus remembers getting a call from Columbia Records to write a third verse for a song that had not yet blown up nationwide. It was March, and he went to work in a studio with writer Jozzy (Jocelyn Donald). She was there to coax lyrics out of him, he concedes, as he isn't used to writing on demand like that. So they started riffing on his rock star look and about 10 minutes later had this lyric:
"Baby's got a habit, diamond rings and marijuana."
Cyrus thought it was hilarious, but someone higher up on the totem pole scrapped it. "They said everything but the marijuana," he says, so Jozzy suggested Fendi sports bras.

Lil Wayne performed his remix of “Old Town Road” during the rapper’s Lollapalooza set Saturday.
The remix has been kicking around since mid-July, when a snippet of Lil Wayne’s version leaked and the rapper started performing it on his co-headlining tour with Blink-182. Lil Wayne’s contribution leaked in full earlier this week, with the rapper’s verses replacing Mason Ramsey’s vocals alongside Young Thug on the latest remix of the never-ending “Old Town Road.”
