Babymetal are currently on their headline tour of the US which kicked off earlier this month with a set at Orlando’s Hard Rock Live. On Sunday evening, the Japanese outfit played at The Anthem in Washington – and fan-filmed footage by user Jim Powers from the evening has now appeared online, showing Babymetal tearing through tracks including Gimme Chocolate, Megitsune, Elevator Girl, PA PA YA!!, Distortion and KARATE. Footage of Babymetal's September 8 show at The Anthem in Washington, D.C. has recently surfaced online. The band's trek kicked off on September 4 in Orlando, FL, and will continue until the October 16 stop in Seattle, WA.  The new Babymetal album "Metal Galaxy" is scheduled for release on October 11 as the follow-up to 2016's "Metal Resistance." Speaking to Metal Hammer magazine, BABYMETAL's Su-metal said that she and Moametal are still on good terms with their former bandmate. "We've been together for a long time — Yuimetal is like a family member to this group," she said. "Although she has left, we'll continue to support her and hope that she can pursue what she'd like to do in the future."  BABYMETAL manager Kobametal admitted that he was initially concerned about how the duo would react to losing their longtime bandmate. "Obviously I was worried about them, but at the same time I respect each member — and both of them have become adults, and each of them are continuing BABYMETAL because they want to," he said. "I definitely appreciate that. There's a sort of trust between this group and I trust that they want to do it." BABYMETAL's fall 2019 U.S. headlining tour kicked off on September 4 in Orlando, Florida, and will run through October 16 in Seattle, Washington. The trek includes the previously announced October 11 gig at The Forum in Los Angeles, which will mark BABYMETAL's first headlining arena show in the States. Support on the BABYMETAL tour through the October 4 show in San Francisco will come from the Swedish metal band AVATAR. |

 The new album. The next chapter. The full story. Babymetal. On sale tomorrow. This is not a drill. An all-girl metal band from Japan exists. They are called Babymetal, and they are here to save us with pigtails, thigh-high stockings, and totally cute and demonic choreography.  Part glitch metal, part idol group — in other words, curated and manufactured Japanese talent — Babymetal formally hit the scene in 2012. Apparently none of the band’s three members, Su-metal, Moametal, or Yuimetal (who has since dropped out of the group) knew WTF metal was before assembling and even reportedly endured headaches from excessive headbanging during early rehearsals. Anyway, like any respectable metal band, Babymetal does not answer to the traditional Western god, but they also don’t spit goat’s blood in the name of satan. No, Babymetal is ruled by their master, a very cute fox god named Fox God, and their third record, Metal Galaxy is out next month. BABYMETAL invented (debated sometimes, instead as they simply popularized) the genre known as kawaii metal, or cute metal, which encompasses an odd mixture between J-pop, power metal, speed metal, and general extreme metals. What sets kawaii metal apart from just Japenese power metal is the cute factor and dirtier, blacker, death-ier instrumentation. You can regularly find breakdown after breakdown chugging along, nonstop double bass drumming for minutes at a time, and sludgy riffs that bring your eardrums straight to a kawaii Hell.  The big kicker is that they grew to widespread popularity when they were just cute, Japanese, girly, and lolita-wearing teenagers. They have played with big named metal musicians such as UK-based Rob Halford (of Judas Priest) when the kawaii metal band made a special guest appearance in the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards. Along with their unique combination of metal and J-pop, BABYMETAL also blends a conglomeration of genres like ska, rap, and EDM throughout their musical library.  There’s no way to describe them quite well, so I suggest you check out a fun track like “Karate” and consider coming to the show! I can guarantee that it will be a truly unique concert. So can Rob Halford, as in his words– “I think Babymetal are one of the most unique metal experiences in the world right now.” |
