Simon Cowell asked the singer to sing a cappella and she did an incredible job!
Taking to the “America’s Got Talent” stage, 12-year-old singer Ansley Burns started off by chatting with judge Simon Cowell, who complemented her Southern accent and asked what song she was going to sing for her audition.
“‘Think’ by Aretha Franklin,” she told Cowell, who was somewhat incredulous.
“You’re going to do Aretha?” he asked. “At 12? Okay, you sure?”
“Where’d they get the track from?” Cowell asked fellow judge Julianne Hough before holding up his hand to halt the performance.
“Ansley, Ansley, sorry babe,” Cowell told her. “I don’t think this backing track was working for you. I think it was a horrible, horrible backing track, so I don’t think we can judge you properly on this, I really don’t. We really like you, but that was terrible.”

Ansley Burns may be gone, but she certainly won’t be forgotten. This 12-year-old singer from South Carolina made a huge impression on “America’s Got Talent” fans thanks to mean judge Simon Cowell stopping her mid-performance not once, but twice. Both times Simon stopped her because he didn’t like the backing track, then asked her to sing a capella on the spot. Despite judges Simon, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union, Howie Mandel and Ellie Kemper all raving about her last performance, Ansley was eliminated in the third Judge Cuts episode. Now a whopping 41% of people who voted in our recent poll claim that Ansley was “robbed” of a shot in the live shows. Following Ansley’s performance of Carrie Underwood‘s “Good Girl,” Gabrielle proclaimed that she “blew it out of the water.” Guest judge Ellie noted that she “cannot believe the voice” that came out of Ansley at such a young age. Simon said that he thought there’s “something special” about Ansley, adding, “Our job is to see where you could go and where we could help you.” Well, the door is still open for Simon and co. to “help” Ansley by giving her a coveted wild card spot in the upcoming live shows. As a reminder, last year three wild card acts were given the chance to return to “AGT” in the live shows after previously saying goodbye, so our fingers are crossed that the judges don’t forget about Ansley when it comes time for them to make their tough decisions.

Following a rather controversial America's Got Talent judge cuts episode earlier this month where Ansley Burns was eliminated, the 13-year-old vocalist ended up coming back as a wildcard pick in the quarterfinals. But the fact that she returned to the stage on Tuesday night to sing Leann Rimes's "Swingin" had many AGT viewers feeling conflicted. After all, judge Simon Cowell did stop both her first and judge cut auditions because of her backing track. In the first round, where she took on Aretha Franklin's "Think," Simon complained that her backing track was "horrible" and asked her to sing the song a cappella, instead. The second time around when she sang Carrie Underwood's "Good Girl," he lamented that the background music was "too loud" altogether. Thankfully, Ansley was able to get through her entire quarterfinals audition without any interruption from Simon ... though, he still voiced a minor complaint at the end. “America’s Got Talent” sweetheart Ansley Burns returned to NBC’s reality TV show as a wild card in the Quarterfinals 1 episode and all eyes were on whether mean judge Simon Cowell would stop her mid-performance for the third time in a row. Thankfully, the 13-year-old South Carolina singer was able to perform her rendition of LeAnn Rimes‘ “Swingin” from start to finish without any interruptions. It’s a miracle! However, Simon still did scold Ansley for her song choice — because what else is new? Will America vote Ansley through to the Semifinals? Watch the performance video above, read the judges’ comments below and make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.

Ansley Burns has a favorite word to use when talking about her experience on “America’s Got Talent.” That word is “amazing.” The 13-year-old singer from Easley is preparing to compete in the semifinals in the next couple of weeks, but even if she doesn’t make it through to the finals, she’s had a great time. “This is an amazing opportunity, and I’m so proud I got to be up on the stage and do what I love,” Ansley said. “So it’s so amazing, and (I hope) that people will tune in and vote for me, please.” Votes from fans are what got her through to the semifinals last week. On the quarterfinals, Ansley sang a bouncy version of “Swingin’,” and earned kudos from the judges. But the following night, Ansley was revealed to be in the bottom three contestants, following audience votes from the previous night’s performances. Viewers had the chance to cast their votes to save one of the three and send them to semifinals, and Ansley won the vote.

Even though 13-year-old Ansley Burns, aka “America’s underdog,” was eliminated during the “AGT” Semifinals, she has no hard feelings toward the voters who let her slip through the cracks. “To all of the supporters and to all the viewers of ‘America’s Got Talent,’ thank you guys so much for everything,” the South Carolina native states in her exit interview with NBC (watch above). “Thank you for leaving a comment on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. It really means a lot and it makes me really happy. I’ve read all of them, so I’ve seen it!”
SEE‘America’s Got Talent’ outrage: Charlotte Summers fans disappointed she didn’t receive final wild card spot Ansley goes on to mention her infamous audition in which mean judge Simon Cowell stopped her in the middle of her “Think” performance and asked if she wanted a drink of his water. “My greatest memory from ‘AGT’ is when Simon gave me his water because it was just really cool,” she smiles. “When I first walked out on stage it was a little bit terrifying. I was really, really excited though.”
Now that her “America’s Got Talent” journey is over, Ansley adds, “I’m probably gonna have a normal life, I don’t really know. Something may pop up again, but yeah it’s just gonna be old and normal. I’m still gonna be singing!” Ansley made it all the way to the Season 14 Semifinals thanks to a combination of earning the judges’ wild card and then winning the Dunkin’ Save.
“So for anyone who wants to audition for ‘America’s Got Talent,’ go for it,” she tells aspiring contestants sitting at home on their couches. “Do what you love and just have fun because that’s all it’s about. The greatest thing about auditioning for ‘AGT’ was you could do whatever you really want.” She concludes by saying auditioners will feel like “a part of their family” at NBC’s reality TV show.
