Alanis Morissette is hitting the road.

On Monday, the singer announced a 31-date tour in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of her acclaimed 1995 album Jagged Little Pill. Kicking off in Portland, Oregon in early June and winding down in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of July, the anniversary tour also brings along special guest stars Garbage and Liz Phair for the ride.

The Live Nation-produced tour follows the launch of the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill, inspired by and featuring Morissette’s music, which officially opens at the Broadhurst Theater in New York on Thursday.

Presales for the concerts begin on Dec. 10, with tickets going on sale to the general public beginning Dec. 13.

Every artist has to start somewhere, and one of Alanis Morrissette's earliest shots was when she opened for Vanilla Ice. And it turns out there were some very strict rules to follow.

Now, this was a few years before "Jagged Little Pill" made her one of the biggest stars of the alternative scene in 1995. Instead, it was the early '90s and Vanilla Ice was king of the pop world with "Ice Ice Baby," while Alanis was more musically akin to pop princesses like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany.

When a caller asked her if the rumors were true that one of her edicts as an opening act for the biggest pop-rap star of all time was that she could not make direct eye contact with Robert Van Winkle (Ice's real name), she gave the most hilarious and diplomatic answer we've ever heard. "This is the best answer ever," Andy Cohen declared, and he's not wrong.

"A lot of artists are overwhelmed by incredible, large amounts of stimuli and I think me looking at him was overstimulating him," Alanis said quite seriously. "So I just averted my eyes."

Alanis Morissette’s millions-selling 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill, culminated with a call: Wake up. Those were the last words Morissette sang on the album before a reprise of “You Oughta Know.” Now they’re the mission statement for the Jagged Little Pill musical that just opened on Broadway.

“It’s a trope now: Are you woke?” the show’s director, Diane Paulus, told me when I met with her and the writer, Diablo Cody, at New York City’s Broadhurst Theatre in November, while the show was still in previews. “But 20-something years ago, she had a whole song about waking up.”

There’s a lot that the musical’s main characters, four members of a fictional present-day suburban family, have been sleeping through. Rape, trauma, opioid addiction, sexual fluidity, porn, therapy, and racial identity figure into story lines set to songs from throughout Morissette’s catalog. Protest is a major motif, and audience members will spend part of their time reading slogans on topics like gun violence and menstruation. The production, a New York Times headline said last year, is “The Most Woke Musical Since ‘Hair.’”

Woke, the modern slang for progressive political engagement, should be a term of praise. But it sometimes comes with an eye roll. When I first saw Jagged Little Pill, as it was being workshopped in Massachusetts in spring 2018, it felt unbalanced, its ideas overshadowing its characters. I heard the term after-school special in the post-show lobby, and I thought about the play again when Wesley Morris argued in The New York Times Magazine that politics had come to trump aesthetics in recent art. The version of Jagged Little Pill that’s now playing on Broadway has been refined into a crowd-pleaser that lands big emotional punches. Still, reviews have been divided between critics annoyed at and pleased with its style of social commentary. The New Yorker called the show a “topical muddle,” but the Times praised it as “a summation: of our world’s worst ills but also the way song can summon resistance to them.”

Alanis Morissette opened up about how she educates her children using an unconventional process called “unschooling.”

“Unschooling, for me, is child-led education,” she recently told Health.com. “So if there’s some agenda like, ‘Let’s play with these magnet tiles,’ and my daughter is like, ‘F–k those tiles. I want to put glitter on that thing and cut the tree and put the thing,’ boom — we do that.”

The “Ironic” singer, 45, says it’s a good way to see things from her kids’ perspectives.

“I basically get inside their eyeballs,” she said. “I’m constantly watching their eyes and what they’re pulled toward, and then we do the deep dive.”

She and husband Mario “Souleye” Treadway use their home as a creative place for learning opportunities and said there’s not really just one right way to practice the teaching technique.

“My husband and I create pods all over the house — here’s where the spelling area is, and here’s where the fake animals are,” she explained. “There’s probably a better definition of unschooling, but there’s no rigidity to it.”

Morissette added that because the process is so hands-on, “unschooling” may not be the right fit for all parents.

“If my son is going to bed late on tour and he asks me three really huge, existential questions, there’s no, ‘Ah, we’ll talk about it in the morning.’ That is the moment. Unschooling is 24/7,” she said. “When I share with people that I unschool, a lot of people I’m close with say they’d love to do it but just can’t. And I get it. I’m like, ‘Yes. I understand, and I think it’s a smart choice not to do it.’ It’s a major commitment.”
