Katy Perry has unveiled the first footage from her current 'Prismatic World Tour'. Featuring songs from her latest album Prism, the tour launched on Wednesday (May 7) at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. The singer's 22-song set list features music from her last two albums, as well as a mash-up of her song 'International Smile' and Madonna's 'Vogue'. Wearing outrageous stage outfits including giant bananas and life-size clams, Perry is joined on stage at one point by a mechanical horse. Lady Gaga seemingly took a dig at Perry's tour, tweeting: "It looks like green hair and mechanical horses are the thing now." Perry's tour includes four headlining shows at London's O2 Arena, as well as a set at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Glasgow. She will then launch the North American leg of the 'Prismatic World Tour' world tour in Raleigh on June 22.

No one could ever accuse Katy Perry of doing things by half measures. Just over three years after her last visit, she returned to Nottingham with a stage show that was every bit as breathtakingly elaborate as before. Opening the show with Roar, perhaps her biggest hit to date, Katy emerged from a collapsing pyramid, in the centre of a massively extended triangular stage that reached more than halfway into the Arena’s standing section. In the middle of this triangle, her superfans were enclosed in a special pen, cut off from the rest of the crowd. This wasn’t perhaps the ideal vantage point, as their idol spent a lot of time at the very front of the stage, with her back turned to them – but they still looked appropriately thrilled throughout. In the midst of this spectacle, Katy shimmied, hoofed and mugged, ever the showgirl, in a space-age crop top and matching skater skirt. The hem of her skirt and the edges of her top were also illuminated, as were the braids in her pony tail. “We’re back”, she announced. “Let’s be in this moment, right now, together. Let’s forget about tomorrow!” Across the hall, anxious mothers checked their watches, while their daughters screamed with unrestrained delight. Having focussed on her most recent album, Prism, for most of the show, Katy returned to some of her older hits for the finale: Teenage Dream, California Gurls, and a showstopping rendition of Firework. Alone on the stage in a voluminous multi-coloured skirt, she twirled beneath the pyrotechnics, singing her heart out, caught up in the moment, and unabashedly lapping up the experience for all it was worth. The triumph was deserved. No one else at the top of their game in contemporary pop is working it as hard as Katy Perry right now; for while Gaga and Bieber might be stumbling, she continues to reign supreme.

It was loud and brash with production values as impressive as the string of hits which followed one after another. Katy Perry's thumping pop songs were accompanied by amazing pyrotechnics, dazzling light shows, circus acrobatics and films which ranged from the silly to surreal. Amidst all this were an impressive number of costume changes through which the pop princess transformed into tribal icon, an Egyptian Queen and so on. Dressed as a pink cat, she balanced on a giant ball of wool while singing her way through a slowed down Hot N Cold. It was pop theatre on a gigantic scale. And it had the production values of a top West End show. Energy levels were only lowered briefly for the acoustic set – during which her voice came to the fore, and for a while there was no distraction from the activity around her. Of course fans were there to hear the hits and they were not disappointed – I Kissed A Girl, Roar and Teenage Dream were all delivered with the LG Arena audience screaming along.

Katy Perry brought the celebrations for the Big Weekend music festival to an end, with acts praising the Glasgow crowd for creating an "incredible" atmosphere. Some of the biggest names in music took to the stage over the weekend-long event operated by BBC Radio 1. Up to 50,000 people attended the free music festival over two days, with other perfomances on the In New Music We Trust stage coming from a number of acts, including Kasabian, Klaxons, Twin Atlantic and Sam Smith. Coldplay, One Direction, Calvin Harris and Kings of Leon were among the acts who entertained the crowds at Glasgow Green. It's a perfect storm!
