At "The Fest," which takes place today at the Pennysaver Amphitheater in Long Island, New York, he is sharing the stage with such artists as Brantley Gilbert, Thomas Rhett, Tyler Farr, Leah Turner and American Young. "It feels good. It's a little warm out. We are looking forward to the show tonight. There are a lot of friends on this show, so it's pretty cool," he said.
His eponymous debut album has been a critical success. "It's what you want to happen," he said. "You hope it gets out there to the fans and 'Chillin' It' has definitely helped us out. Even 'Hope You Get Lonely Tonight' is keeping pretty steady. It's hard to believe my name is up there with all these other artists. Being a new guy, that's pretty special to me," he said.
His single "Chillin' It" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and it stayed there for two weeks; moreover, it was certified platinum. "I still can't believe that," he explained. "That's something you can never expect."
"Hope You Get Lonely Tonight" has reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts, and he noted that the song is "picking up some steam." Swindell co-wrote the song with Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard from Florida Georgia Line and Michael Carter, the lead guitar player from Luke Bryan's band. "I am excited that it is moving," he said. "After having a first No. 1, you need to follow it up with another song, and that is the perfect song to do it. No. 1 singles don't come around every day. We are working hard every day, and we keep pushing and we will see what happens."
A Georgia native, Swindell co-wrote the ballad "I Just Want You" with country mega-star Luke Bryan. "That's the only song that I have on the album that we wrote together. That was one, I wasn't sure about putting on my album, but I trusted the team around me. I always thought it was a great song, and the reaction from everybody is awesome. The guys and girls both love it, and that's what you want to happen," he said. Swindell listed country songstress Cassadee Pope as his dream female duet choice. "I'm a fan of hers. She's got a great voice," he said.
