The coronavirus pandemic hasn't stopped Selena Gomez and Trevor Daniel from creating a new music video for their song "Past Life." The two singers released the video today: an Instagram Live jam session turned trippy aerial landscape journey. It's a stunning example of the kind of creativity and innovative solutions artists can use to create new content in quarantine.
Daniel released his remix of the song with Gomez on the track at the end of June. Gomez spoke to him about why she wanted to get involved with the song, saying, “When I heard the song the first time, I loved the fact that it was kind of like a story about all the things that we tend to hold onto and the patterns that we have,” she said. “And I’m very, very vocal about my personal experiences making decisions that maybe aren’t necessarily healthy for me.”
Gomez, of course, spoke candidly at the beginning of this year about her experience dating Justin Bieber, how that relationship became toxic, and the importance of her understanding why she stayed in it and made that choice.
"It's dangerous to stay in a victim mentality," Gomez told NPR reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro when asked about getting over Bieber. "And I'm not being disrespectful, I do feel I was a victim to certain abuse—"
"You mean emotional abuse?" Garcia-Navarro asked.
"Yes, and I think that it's something that—I had to find a way to understand it as an adult. And I had to understand the choices I was making. As much as I definitely don't want to spend the rest of my life talking about this, I am really proud that I can say I feel the strongest I've ever felt and I've found a way to just walk through it with as much grace as possible."
