Join Selena and David who are reuniting after 8 years to bring you a one of a kind feel good experience for their new movie “This is the Year”, where you’ll enjoy a live virtual premiere on August 28 hosted by Charli & Dixie D’Amelio, question and answers with David, Selena and the cast and a performance by lovelytheband! Is a new Wizards of Waverly Place project on the way? That's what fans are hoping after Selena Gomez and David Henrie's recent reunion. The former co-stars seemed to have pulled off a bit of magic for their get together amid the coronavirus pandemic. A video Henrie posted to Instagram on Sunday shows him and Gomez standing on opposite sides of a wall. "Hmm," Henrie says in the clip, before panning the camera over to show Gomez, playfully tapping her lips in contemplation. Gomez reposted the video on her Instagram Story, and so did her fellow Wizards co-star Gregg Sulkin. Henrie's reunion with Gomez comes about a week after he got together with Sulkin and Jennifer Stone. The group revisited their favorite on-set moments and played Wizards of Waverly Place trivia for a video on Sulkin's YouTube channel with Cameron Fuller. http://instagram.com/p/CDtzKMApbiI Gomez has stayed especially close with Henrie since the Disney Channel show aired its series finale in 2012. Henrie helped Gomez set up her Instagram account years ago, and her very first Instagram Story in 2017 featured her and Henrie speculating on what their characters would be up to now. "You have kids. Alex is for sure single," Gomez said at the time. http://instagram.com/p/CDrfM6ppUYI "Yeah, Justin has, like, 15 children," Henrie agreed. "Alex is single; she's still trying to find herself. She's now, like, 25, and she's trying to figure things out." "[Jake T. Austin's] Max is lucky if he's even found himself. Like, he's literally lost," Henrie continued, while Gomez laughed. "He now just makes sandwiches on the street." Last year, Henrie told ET that he and Gomez discuss a possible Wizards reboot "all the time."

Selena Gomez will reunite with her Wizards of Waverly Place co-star David Henrie, as producer of his upcoming directorial debut This is the Year. Emblematic of this year, the film will have a virtual premiere -- something that has become increasingly common. Less common is that the film's premiere will be "fully interactive, according to Entertainment Tonight, who broke the story. Henrie and Gomez will present an introduction to the film, followed by a cast Q&A moderated by TikTok stars Charli and Dixie D’Amelio. Platinum-selling group lovelytheband will perform, and the whole event will support the PLUS1 COVID-19 Relief Fund. This Is The Year sounds a bit like Can't Hardly Wait by way of Detroit Rock City. Per ET, the film "centers on a nerdy high school senior (Lorenzo Henrie), who, in a last-ditch effort to win over the girl of his dreams, embarks on a road trip with friends to see their favorite band at the hottest music festival of the year. Of course, he then discovers true love in the most unexpected place." Also appearing in the film are Gregg Sulkin and Jeff Garlin, also alumni of Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as Vanessa Marano (Gilmore Girls), Jake Short (A.N.T. Farm), Alyssa Jirrels (Girl Meets World) and Bug Hall (The Little Rascals). In addition to Wizards of Waverly Place, Henrie appeared in a number of TV projects including Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana, That's So Raven, and Method and Red. He is probably most familiar to anybody who isn't a huge Wizards fan as Luke Mosby, the son of Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Mother. Alongside Lyndsy Fonseca, Henrie sat on a couch and listened to Josh Radnor pontificate about his love life for years, although the finale's twist was actually shot very early in the show's life so that they didn't have to worry about Henrie and Fonseca potentially aging too much over the years. At the time of the show's finale -- one of the most divisive of all time -- Henrie had already started to work behind the scenes as a camera operator in Hollywood.

Hollywood is home to some unlikely friends. But one of the strangest has to be the friendship between Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez. She’s all pop, and he’s a comedian. Gomez is a double threat. She started out acting on the Disney Channel, but her music is strong too. Some of her songs have become big hits. She’s also well known for being a long time on-again, off-again girlfriend of Justin Bieber. Rudd, on the other hand, is a staple of comedy features. He’s been in classics like Anchorman, and Knocked Up, with his funny friends. They seem to run with different crowds, are decades apart in age, and have different interests. So how did these two end up friends? http://instagram.com/p/CDeWUvTDfcL Netflix’s runaway indie hit, The Fundamentals of Caring, had a profound impact on anyone who saw it. Viewers weren’t the only ones changed by the film. The movie, which stars Rudd as a newly hired caretaker for a boy with muscular dystrophy, according to Variety. Rudd’s ward is quite the prankster, and the two go on an adventure filled with laughter as well as many healing moments. On their travels, they meet a young girl played by Gomez. She inevitably becomes the troubled love interest of Rudd’s client and joins them on their way. Rudd knew who Gomez was before filming the movie. However, he didn’t realize exactly how famous she was until they were together on set. “It wasn’t until we were filming and I saw thousands of people turning out to try and see her that I realized what a phenomenon she is. To see her deal with that kind of fame, I came away even more impressed with her. She’s extraordinary.” Since filming The Fundamentals of Caring, Rudd has joined the ranks of Gomez’s many fans. He believes she’s multitalented, and that her skills go beyond acting and singing. In fact, Rudd’s admiration of Gomez is pretty intense, as far as fans go. He owns a shirt with her baby picture screen printed on it. He’s worn it in front of Gomez, and they’ve been pictured together while he wears it. The whole thing is unbelievably adorable. If any celebrity friendship is #FriendshipGoals, it’s Rudd and Gomez. Despite the fact that the pop star is often linked to her BFF Taylor Swift, Rudd and Gomez have a much cuter friendship. http://instagram.com/p/CDRvviqjltF The shirt with Gomez’s face on it is cute, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the cute outfits these two wear together. They’ve been pictured twinning in the same outfit on more than one occasion. They did an event for charity to benefit Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. They snapped a few selfies together, Rudd in his white Royal’s jersey with blue letters, and Gomez in her blue Royal’s jersey with white letters. They also had matching baseball caps. Then, they went bowling together and wore the same bowling shirt. They were pictured sharing a sweet moment, with Gomez putting her head on Rudd’s shoulder. They have walked red carpets and attended award shows together. They gave a speech together at the Billboard Women in Music Luncheon, and did a lot of promotion for The Fundamentals of Caring together. That included going to Sundance and sitting next to each other at the premiere. They’ve also been pictured hanging out at swanky Golden Globe after-parties. Even though they haven’t worked on a project together in a while, Gomez and Rudd still get together when they can, according to People.

While Gomez and Henrie began acting as kids, they became famous in their teens while starring in the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place. They portrayed Alex and Justin Russo, respectively — seemingly ordinary adolescents who learn magic to determine which of them will continue on their family’s line of wizards.
When the series ended in 2012, each continued their careers separately. But they’ve remained friends throughout the years. Gomez, along with other Wizards of Waverly Place co-stars like Jake T. Austin and Maria Canals-Barrera, attended Henrie’s 2017 wedding.
She joined his film ‘This is the Year’ as an executive producer
Now, the two have teamed up for what’s been deemed a Wizards of Waverly Place reunion. Gomez executive-produced Henrie’s directorial debut, This Is The Year. And not only that, but fans can watch their virtual reunion from home during a live premiere event.
“I’m reuniting with my friend and big brother, David Henrie,” said Gomez in the event trailer. “David and I are so excited to announce the first-ever live virtual film premiere for our new movie, This Is The Year, which premieres August 28th, that I know will give you all the feels. With all the craziness going on in the world, a feel-good movie is just what we need.”
Gomez is no stranger to working behind-the-scenes. She executive produced Netflix’s drama 13 Reasons Why and docuseries Living Undocumented. She currently has several other projects in the works, including her HBO Max show Selena + Chef. Because of this, Gomez was quick to offer her former co-star tips as he worked on his film.
“Because we’ve been such good friends, we know what’s going on in each other’s lives,” Henrie told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “So she knew about the movie for a long time, even when we started shooting it. And she always had been giving me executive producer-type advice just as a friend. Look out for this person to cast, this film. She always gave me good advice.”
Why Gomez loved ‘This is the Year’
With This Is The Year, Henrie paid tribute to ’80s coming-of-age movies. But he also wanted to make it more relevant to a modern audience. “The ’80s made some really great films and some fun films and meaningful films,” said Henrie. “But there were some tropes they established that didn’t age very well,” he added, referring specifically to the one-note hot girl trope.
“This is actually the thing that got Selena Gomez involved in the film. She really loved how we flipped some tropes on their heads,” Henrie continued. “So it just was in the same conversation [that we said], ‘Let’s do it, let’s join forces.’ It was supernatural and not really planned in that sense, you know, it’s just was kind of organic.”
