Demi Lovato performed her new song with a message for viewers to "VOTE" ... but when it aired on NBC ... the network muzzled her message. Lovato took the stage Wednesday for a moving rendition of her song "Commander in Chief," a song that takes direct aim at President Trump. We've obtained footage of Demi's performance -- the way she wanted it to air and it was originally recorded -- and at the end the word "VOTE" is very clearly displayed across the video board on the stage. That final message was gone when the show aired on TV. In its place -- a close-up of Demi at the piano. Sources say the network pulled the plug on the "VOTE" message because the song itself was a slam on Trump and the "VOTE" message was a call to vote against him. The song's lyrics leave no question about Lovato's feelings about the Prez ... "Commander in Chief, honestly. If I did the things you do, I couldn't sleep, seriously. Do you even know the truth? We're in a state of crisis, people are dyin.' While you line your pockets deep. Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still be able to breathe?" She doubled down on her message earlier Wednesday, saying, "I literally don't care if this ruins my career." We've reached out to NBC for comment ... so far, no word back.

After she released "Commander in Chief," an overt anti-Trump protest anthem co-written with Julia Michaels, Finneas, Justin Tranter and Eren Cannata, Demi Lovato delivered an emotional performance of the single at the Billboard Music Awards, telecast Wednesday night. NBC reportedly edited from broadcast the word "VOTE" in large letters behind Lovato during her prerecorded performance. The network published the original edit of Lovato's performance on its website, with the large backdrop appearing at the end, but this version was not aired during the Billboard Music Awards telecast. Instead, Lovato's performance ended with a close-up of the singer looking down at her piano, sans the "VOTE" visual. Before the telecast ended, the NBC Entertainment Twitter account tweeted out a photo of Lovato's performance with "VOTE" being a dominant aspect. Even though this image did not air, Lovato retweeted it without comment. NBC is set to air a town hall with Trump on Thursday evening. Lovato wasn't the only performer encouraging viewers to vote during the telecast. Pop stars Billie Eilish and Lizzo shared messages about civic duty in their acceptance speeches, with the latter wearing a dress decorated with "VOTE." Following Lovato's performance, the music video for "Commander in Chief" dropped on YouTube. Black children, deaf and hard-of-hearing people, people who use wheelchairs, queer and Indigenous people come together to sing Lovato's lyrics: "If I did the things you do / I couldn't sleep, seriously / Do you even know the truth? / We're in a state of crisis, people are dyin' / While you line your pockets deep / Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still / Be able to breathe?" Lovato, a queer Hispanic woman, responded to criticism of her politics on Instagram, sharing that she is more interested in voicing her beliefs as an American than pleasing her fans. "I literally don't care if this ruins my career," she wrote Wednesday in a time-limited story post. "This isn't about that. My career isn't about that. I made a piece of art that stands for something I believe in. And I'm putting it out even at the risk of losing fans. I'll take integrity in my work over sales any day."

After debuting her new “Commander in Chief” song earlier in the day, Demi Lovato delivered an emotive version of the protest song Wednesday night on the Billboard Music Awards telecast — a powerful anti-Trump message for NBC to be putting on the air, especially the night before the network is to host a controversial town hall with the president.
But after the telecast aired, it seemed to be stirring more controversy among the left than the right, surprisingly, as a result of a TMZ report about edits made to the performance by the network. The website published what it said was the original edit of Lovato’s performance, in which a large electronic backdrop was to have lit up at the end, revealing the word “VOTE” in huge white letters. This was not the version seen on the telecast, which had Lovato’s performance ending with an awkward closeup of the singer looking down, and no sign of the “VOTE” visual.
TMZ’s story claimed: “Sources say the network pulled the plug on the ‘VOTE’ message because the song itself was a slam on Trump and the ‘VOTE’ message was a call to vote against him.”
If the idea was to keep the “VOTE” signage from being seen, the message may not have gotten to NBC’s social media team. Before the show ended, NBC Entertainment’s account tweeted out a photo in which the “VOTE” backdrop was by far the dominant part of the image, even though it was never seen on the airwaves. Lovato retweeted NBC’s image without comment.
Variety has reached out to NBC, Dick Clark Productions and Lovato’s reps for comment.

The Billboard Music Awards are the latest award ceremony to have a modified show during the coronavirus, with no audience. Taylor Swift was among the handful of nominees to skip attending the ceremony in person. Only winners accepted their awards in person, and not all categories were announced.
Swift was nominated for Top Artist, the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Album (Lover). Swift could've made history if she won in multiple categories.
As Billboard put it, if Swift won Top Artist, it would have been record-setting—and her third time ever winning it. But Post Malone won the award.
If she won the Top Billboard 200 Album for Lover, it would've been her third time winning that category, which would also set a record. But Billie Eilish won that award.
If she won Top Female Artist or Top Billboard 200 Artist, it would've been for a record-setting fourth time. But Eilish won Top Female Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Artist wasn't announced during the show. Lizzo won Top Song Sales Artist, and the Billboard Chart Achievement Award wasn't announced at the ceremony.
Swift recently made headlines for her first-time ever endorsing a presidential candidate last week. Swift backed Democratic nominee Joe Biden, explaining her choice to V magazine. She said:
The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA+ community deserves to be acknowledged and included. Everyone deserves a government that takes global health risks seriously and puts the lives of its people first. The only way we can begin to make things better is to choose leaders who are willing to face these issues and find ways to work through them.
I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs.
