Bring Me The Horizon have revealed that Evanescence once sued the band, before it emerged that singer Amy Lee was a fan and they agreed to collaborate together.
Speaking to NME for this week’s Big Read cover story, BMTH frontman Oli Sykes revealed the unusual way that Amy Lee came to feature on the new song ‘One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March To Your Death’ from their new EP, ‘Post Human: Survival Horror‘.
“The weird thing about Evanescence is that we got sued by them on our last record,” Sykes told NME. “On ‘Nihilist Blues’ [from 2019 album ‘amo‘], we ripped off one of their verses. It was subconscious, but when it happened we were like, ‘We’re not even going to argue’.”
After the band agreed to share a songwriting credit with Lee, Evanescence’s management got in touch: “They were like, ‘Amy really likes your band and would love to work with you’. That was the silver lining.”
Sykes added: “The idea of that song is that I’m mankind, Amy is Mother Nature and it felt like the perfect thing to have the mother of rock singing it.”
Elsewhere in our interview, as well discussing cancel culture and the impact of coronavirus on the world stage, Sykes spoke of how the band came to work with the other collaborators on ‘Survival Horror’, namely Yungblud, Nova Twins and BABYMETAL.
Of Yungblud, Sykes told us: He’s the kind of artist that rock needs – the kind of rock star that changes a scene. I love him; he lights up a room. He’s the polar opposite to me. I wish I could have that confidence that he has. It’s infectious and that’s why a lot of kids look up to him.
“Not since Bowie have we had people who are just so unashamedly and genuinely themselves and don’t give a fuck or play by the rules.”

Bring Me The Horizon‘s latest EP POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR includes surprise collabs with YUNGBLUD, Nova Twins, BABYMETAL and Evanescence‘s Amy Lee.
Now, Bring Me The Horizon and Amy Lee are offering a behind-the-scenes look into how their collab on “One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be in Your Chest As You March Towards Your Death” came to be. As it turns out, when it came to the collab, there was one minor detail they didn’t agree on.

The atmospheric song is a huge contrast between the other hard-hitting tracks found throughout the EP such as “Teardrops” and “Dear Diary,.”
While working on the song, BMTH knew they wanted Amy Lee to be involved. As it turns out, Lee and Bring Me The Horizon met under unusual circumstances. Back in 2019, BMTH were accused of plagiarising one of Evanescence’s songs on “nihilist blues.” Once their managers exchanged words, however, Lee received songwriting credit and a lawsuit was avoided.
Then, earlier this year, Lee and Bring Me The Horizon came together to work on “One Day The Only Butterflies….” In a new behind-the-scenes video, Oli Sykes explains that he’s had the song’s lyrics written for a long time.

You know, I’ve wanted to use it and apply it to something [that] would give it the most meaning because it’s just a mouthful. It’s always been hard to get it in logically and it sound decent.”
He goes on to say that “One Day The Only Butterflies…” is a love song to nature and the world we live in. Bring Me The Horizon knew they wanted to create a song about climate change, but wanted to do so in a way that wasn’t too in the listeners’ faces.
“I wanna just kind of like talk about climate change in a way that’s just not so literal because I think, as stupid as it sounds, people don’t want to have that shoved down their throat.”

“It started with the first time I laid my vocal down and sent it over,” Lee says. “He [Sykes] encouraged me to sing certain parts of the song less, more about breath and less about power. That is challenging for me, I really like that style, but it’s not my comfort zone. It’s easier for me to harness my voice when I just blast it.”
Although their collab seemingly came together effortlessly, there is one particular detail both Lee and Bring Me The Horizon didn’t agree on. For Lee, she thinks the song’s title is a bit too unconventional.
“I’ve very proud of our song,” Lee continues. “Yeah the title has like twenty words, that wasn’t me. I called Oli a bad word when he told me what the name was [laughs].”
Other behind-the-scenes details surrounding POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR have been revealed recently. Last month, Bring Me The Horizon shared why the collab with BABYMETAL on “Kingslayer” was years in the making. As well, Nova Twins revealed the unusual way their collab on “1×1” came to be.
More recently, YUNGBLUD explained why Bring Me The Horizon’s inspiration began long before their collab on “Obey.” He also detailed just how Sykes asked him to be included in the new song.

Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee has spoken to NME about the “real” story of how she landed a writing credit on Bring Me The Horizon‘s ‘Nihilist Blues’, before they went on to collaborate together.
Back in November, BMTH frontman Oli Sykes revealed the unusual way that Amy Lee came to feature on the new song ‘One Day The Only Butterflies Left Will Be In Your Chest As You March To Your Death’ from their new EP, ‘Post Human: Survival Horror’.
Sykes first claimed that they developed a friendship after Evanescence “sued” the band for ‘Nihilist Blues’ from 2019 album ‘amo‘, saying that they had “ripped off one of their verses” from the song ‘Never Go Back’. He soon then corrected himself and told fans: “When I said Evanescence sued the band over ‘Nihilist Blues’, that wasn’t exactly true! Our managers just exchanged words and we offered them song writing credits”.
Now, speaking to NME for this week’s edition of Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells, Lee has elaborated on what really happened.
“Oli and I talked about that after that interview,” Lee told NME. “Maybe it came out in a little bit of a sensational way, because the real story to me is so much more powerful and cool. On the internet, people were talking about that part of the song sounding extremely close to a melody in one of our songs.
“They then contacted us and said: ‘We want to make this right’, and offered me a writing a credit which I wasn’t even asking for. Have you ever heard of such a thing?! It made me respect them more and go and listen to all their music which my drummer [Will Hunt] had already turned me onto earlier because he’s a big fan. That conversation ended with us saying we should collaborate sometime.”
