The Masked Singer season 4 came to an end on Wednesday and the coveted Golden Mask trophy was awarded to The Sun. After a dynamic season of powerful performances, The Sun unmasked and revealed herself to be none other than celebrated songstress LeAnn Rimes.
Rimes repeatedly brought the celebrity panel to tears performing a wide variety of songs from different genres that were a perfect showcase for her vocal talents. Speaking with ET's Nischelle Turner on Thursday, Rimes explained that it was all part of her efforts to prove how she's a unique talent not confined by preconceptions.
"There was so much thought that went into the costume and the song choices, it was a lot of work," Rimes shared. "I really had a very specific story that I wanted to tell and The Sun was like this very visual representation of everything I'm putting out in the world right now with my own music."
For Rimes, trying to push boundaries and subvert expectations has been a constant challenge.
"I started out with Blue, and very, very, deep country, and you know, then crossed over. And I kind of got my hand slapped for that," she recalled. "The lines weren't as blurred as they are now and that wasn't invited."
"I've kind of fought that for a long time of people not knowing where to put me and they want to put me in a box and the more people want to do that, the more I want to claw my way out of it," she continued. "It's just my rebellious side."
Rimes explained that she "got to really kind of embrace that on this show and actually celebrate that. 'Cause every song was different, from a different genre."
Although being The Sun also brought its own challenges -- such as a constricting, difficult and elaborate costume that was far different than anything she'd performed in before.
"It was definitely heavy, and being a singer, of course singing is my focus. Like, I don't care what I look like, I don't care what move I'm doing, I have to sound good," she shared. "So it was challenging to work with that much weight on my body when trying to sing these, like, really powerful songs."
During her time on the show, it turns out that only two people, including her husband, Eddie Cibrian, knew she was involved.
"Eddie was the only person who knew. Eddie and my manager. The kids did not know," Rimes shared.

The couple are parents to two sons -- Mason, 17, and Jake, 13 -- whom Cibrian shares and co-parents with ex-wife Brandi Glanville.
"I told [the kids] last night, I looked at them at the dinner table I was like, 'I can finally tell you, I was on The Mask Singer,'" Rimes said. "My little one, he goes, 'Dang it! I lost a bet with my mom.' I was like, 'Sorry, bud.'"
While she kept her role on the show a secret, many Masked Singer fans thought the clues pointed to her early on in the season. However, Rimes managed to keep the truth hidden when she spoke with ET back in November and deftly denied she was The Sun.
"I have been on that show now every season that it's been on. I have my whole Twitter account is always flooded," Rimes told ET at the time. So I'll forever be on that show, even next year... I am not on The Masked Singer."
LeAnn Rimes shouldn’t feel “Blue”: The singer shined on Wednesday night, as she was unmasked as “The Masked Singer” Season 4 winner — the Sun.
Also revealed: Runner-up Aloe Blacc, who had been dressed as Mushroom, and third-place Nick Carter, who had performed as Crocodile.
“I never thought I would do anything like this and I don’t think I’ll ever do anything like it again,” Rimes told Variety. “It’s such a unique show. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I’m so glad I did.”
Panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg and Nicole Scherzinger got it right with LeAnn Rimes. Ken Jeong thought it was Mandy Moore, while Robin Thicke named Katharine McPhee.
Rimes said she was eager to appear on “The Masked Singer” after the COVID-19 pandemic left her without a stage to perform. “I haven’t been off the road and not performed live since I was 13,” she said. “I was really craving to be on stage. And then, when I thought of what I could bring to this dark moment in time, it felt like perfect timing. This show in itself is just so joyous, unlike really any show on television.”
“It was a million times better than anything I could have ever expected, and also way more challenging,” Rimes said. I never expected the costume to have that much weight. To perform in this costume, it was a workout. I went home every night so sore.” But, she added, “I started so young and I never really got a chance to play. And so for me part of this was like, ‘I get to go play in a costume? OK, cool.'”
Rimes just released the new song “Throw My Arms Around the World,” and also hosts the podcast “Wholly Human.” In performing disguised on “The Masked Singer,” Rimes said she embraced the anonymity.
“One of the beautiful things about being behind the mask was that people got to feel me without any preconceived storyline,” Rimes said. “This is the first time people got to feel my essence, and my voice and my gift where there was no story attached. Especially as a woman, in this business there’s so much [focus on] the way I look and what I’m wearing.”
For Mushroom, Scherzinger figured out it was Blacc, and Thicke piggybacked off that as well; McCarthy Wahlberg named Ne-Yo; and Jeong thought it was Pharrell Williams.

http://instagram.com/p/CI4iRWDJ9a6 LeAnn Rimes dropped in to Wednesday's (Dec. 23) Tamron Hall to discuss seeking treatment for depression and anxiety, and how the support of her husband Eddie Cibran helped her heal. When Hall asked the Grammy-winning singer where she saw her struggles going without help, Rimes was candid in her answer. "I mean, I think it was already going down a dark path, and I think it could have gone even darker," she shared. "I mean, there's no end to that darkness unless there's a true end to it, and I just didn't -- I had too much life left to live. But I definitely think that that darkness can pull you down even further once you're in it and so ... that defiance piece I think was just like, 'I want to I want to live. I know I'm supposed to be living for something.'" http://instagram.com/p/CJEV4CPpSvO The 38-year-old singer said entering treatment after nearly two decades of feeling like all eyes were constantly on her was "the best gift" she could've given herself. "I mean, like, I'd never been alone, really until being in treatment for anxiety and depression." Rimes, who rose to fame as a pre-teen, said she needed to find a way to untangle herself from the feeling of being "constantly on" and embrace the parts of herself that she'd ignored along the way. "I needed to figure out how to unravel from that and really kind of gather those pieces and bring those back into wholeness. And all these pieces that I had rejected about myself, learn how to love them and bring them to the table and realize that they're all -- the totality of me is lovable," she said. It wasn't until she got help that the singer said she realized she was worthy of help and a happy life.

Brandi Glanville spent Christmas with LeAnn Rimes two weeks after she was accused of shading the Masked Singer winner. http://instagram.com/p/CJPw6zZFCwJ “Hanging with the best masked singer of all time leannrimes,” the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, 48, captioned a photo on Instagram that showed the pair holding up one finger while wearing matching Pol’ Atteu sequinned face masks. She also shared videos on her Instagram Story showing the Grammy winner, 38, singing while sitting at a grand piano with a friend. “Merry Christmas everyone,” she captioned the clips. “This is some serious growth right here. I love it,” one person commented on Glanville’s post, while another wrote, “I love that you guys are friendly now!! It takes a strong person to let bygones be bygones — life’s too short!” The former reality TV star’s hangout with Rimes, who is married to Glanville’s ex-husband Eddie Cibrian, came less than two weeks after she was slammed for appearing to diss the “How Do I Live” songstress for appearing as The Sun on season 4 of The Masked Singer. http://instagram.com/p/CJCPCeJJno- “I think the sun is 100 percent Leann Rimes. Although my kids say no way because she told them she would never do this show because it’s sooo beneath her,” the Bravo star tweeted in October as she referred to her sons with Cibrian, Mason, 16, and Jake, 12.
