Alex Morgan is the latest athlete to test positive for the coronavirus. The 31-year-old two-time World Cup winner with the United States women’s national team announced Tuesday that she and had tested positive for COVID-19. Apparently, her husband, pro soccer player Servando Carrasco and seven-month-old daughter, Charlie, were also infected. “Unfortunately, my family and I closed out 2020 learning that we had contracted Covid while in California over the holidays. We are all in good spirits and recovering well,” Morgan wrote to her almost 4 million Twitter followers. “After our isolation is completed, I will follow US Soccer's return to play guidelines to ensure my body is fully recovered and I can join my teammates back on the field soon. Be safe and happy new year.” Morgan returned to her and Carrasco’s native California last month, shortly after ending her short-term loan from the NWSL’s Orlando Pride to English Women’s Super League side Tottenham Hotspur. Morgan scored two goals in five games for Spurs across all competitions. Morgan’s diagnosis makes her among the highest-profile athletes to have contracted the virus and arguably most famous soccer player to test positive since Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo tested positive in October.

U.S. Women's national team forward Alex Morgan announced on twitter that she and her family tested positive for COVID-19 in late December. The announcement comes after the conclusion of the holidays, where Morgan says she and her family had learned they contracted the virus in California. "Unfortunately, my family and I closed out 2020 learning that we had contracted Covid while in California over the holidays. We are all in good spirits and recovering well," Morgan wrote in a tweet. "After our isolation is completed, I will follow US Soccer's return to play guidelines to ensure my body is fully recovered and I can join my teammates back on the field soon. Be safe and happy new year." The 31-year old forward recently returned from England after a brief stint on loan with Tottenham in the FA Women's Super League from her NWSL club, Orlando Pride. Morgan scored two goals in five appearances for Spurs from September to December before making the decision to return to the United States. The NWSL draft is scheduled for Jan. 13 with players expected into club markets come February. Morgan, who is married to American soccer player Servando Carrasco, gave birth to their daughter, Charlie, last year. The USWNT is set to announce their upcoming roster for annual January camps this month. It remains to be seen if Morgan will be a full participant.

The 31-year-old announced that she and her family had contracted coronavirus over the holidays, leading to her exclusion from the U.S. January camp. U.S. women's national team head coach Vlatko Andonovski has said U.S. Soccer will investigate an incident that led to Alex Morgan and her family contracting coronavirus. On Tuesday, Morgan announced that she and her family had tested positive for Covid-19 over the holidays. Following the diagnosis, Morgan was left off the roster for the USWNT's January camp and two friendlies against Colombia. Images on social media have surfaced showing Morgan and several family members congregating over the holidays, and Andonovski hinted that the striker's actions would be examined by U.S. Soccer staff. "I’m sure our chief medical officer George [Chiampas] and the medical staff are looking into this incident with Alex, and we’ll try to correct it if there’s anything that needs to be corrected going forward," Andonovski told reporters on Wednesday.

Alex Morgan admits her decision to leave Tottenham last month was harder than she expected, but said ultimately she returned to the U.S. for the benefit of her family and her NWSL side Orlando Pride. Morgan signed for Spurs in September and departed in January, playing just five games and scoring two goals after initially battling a knee injury. Though she didn’t manage as much playing time as she'd hoped, Morgan said she enjoyed her time with Tottenham more than she anticipated and her decision to return to Orlando was not an easy one. Morgan did not make her Tottenham debut until November after she overcame a knee injury, and she immediately started to have an impact on the pitch for Spurs. Spurs, who had been struggling in the Women’s Super League, won two and drew two of Morgan’s four league matches, with the USWNT star scoring two goals. Though there was some speculation that Morgan could extend her stay in north London, the two-time World Cup winner announced last month that she would return to the United States. What Morgan said about her time with Tottenham “When I did sign, I thought that it was going to be a short-term deal,” Morgan told reporters on Thursday. “That was my mindset going into it because I thought that the NWSL would start back up. I wanted to also be available for all of the training days with the national team. “I knew it was also going to be a strain on our family. Being across the world, not having Charlie be able to see a lot of her cousins or grandparents. And for Servando [Carrasco, her husband] to ask him to move there or not be with us if he was going to continue to pursue playing soccer as well I think would have been really difficult. "As I went through the season with Tottenham, I really enjoyed my time and I really loved it more than I expected. I got to know the girls a lot more than I thought. And the decision ended up being a lot harder than I expected. And I really weighed both sides for quite a few weeks, I had some conversations with Rehanne [Skinner, Tottenham head coach]. Also with some other people within the club, and a lot of my team-mates. “I think ultimately it just came down to coming back to the U.S. because that way I would keep our family as close together as possible. "Given the circumstances, just with the pandemic continuing to really extend into 2021 I felt like it was just best for me to be in the U.S. and be available for the national team and start off a full season with Orlando Pride rather than going to Tottenham late, then finishing the season with Tottenham, then going to Orlando Pride late. "I felt like I wanted to start off preseason with one team and go through an entire season with one team.”

USWNT and Orlando Pride forward Alex Morgan has said she was "fairly sick" with COVID-19 after she and her family tested positive for the virus over Christmas. Morgan, 31, returns to the USWNT squad for the SheBelieves Cup after missing out on the January training camp when she tested positive for the virus alongside her daughter Charlie and husband Servando Carrasco. "I was fairly sick," she told a news conference on Thursday. "Me and my whole family got it -- Servando and Charlie -- so with that said, we were together for 10, 12, 14 days and kind of just recovering, sleeping as much as we could. "I was fighting off a little bit of a fever for quite a few days but as I got back and kind of took the right steps to get my body back into shape, I started to feel really good after about three weeks or so but it did take a little bit, and it took a lot of patience as well, on my end." Morgan was speaking ahead of the opening of the SheBelieves Cup on Feb. 18 with the USWNT taking on Canada, Brazil and Argentina in the tournament. While she missed the January camp, she did make her return to the USWNT in November after taking time out to give birth to Charlie. Following the cancellation of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) regular season she signed with Tottenham in the Women's Super League and spent the first half of the 2020-21 season in England. While her comeback to football was hampered by injury, she said she doesn't feel like her year has been massively different to a lot of her teammates.
