James connects with Sabrina Carpenter, who had her Broadway debut put on hold after "Mean Girls" was shut down after two shows with her as the lead, and asks her to weigh in on the controversy around her hit song "Skin."
The 21-year-old singer/actress recently debuted her song, "Skin," which fans quickly ran with as an apparent response to 17-year-old Olivia Rodrigo's No. 1 hit, "Drivers License." Carpenter's tune sparked further intrigue in the supposed love triangle drama involving Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, who has also worked with Carpenter.
While appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden Tuesday night, Carpenter said that "Skin" has fans assigning different meanings to her own words.
"People will make a narrative out of something always, you know?" she told host Corden, who jested that she was "skirting around" the controversy linked to the song. "I think this was like a really interesting song for people to kind of misinterpret and make it into something that it wasn't really supposed to be in the first place."

Sabrina Carpenter gave a special performance of her song "Skin" on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The 21-year-old singer and actress performed the song remotely during Tuesday's episode of the CBS late-night show. http://instagram.com/p/CLFQE_XAmRj For her performance, Carpenter sang and played piano while in an empty warehouse. Water started falling down on her like rain halfway through the song. The Late Late Show marked Carpenter's first live performance of "Skin." She discussed the controversy surrounding the song in her interview with host James Corden. Carpenter released "Skin" in January following rumored drama with her boyfriend, Joshua Bassett, and his ex-girlfriend and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Olivia Rodrigo. Many believed "Skin" was a response to "Drivers License," a song by Rodrigo in which she sings about missing an ex who has moved on with an older blonde. In "Skin," Carpenter addresses a person who's been trying to get under her skin. "Want my heart to be breaking, breaking, no / I'm happy and you hate it, hate it, oh / And I'm not asking you to let it go / But you been telling your side / So I'll be telling mine, oh," she sings. On The Late Late Show, Carpenter said she wrote "Skin" during a challenging time in her personal life. "I genuinely was coming from a place as a 21-year-old that is navigating her feelings and was going through a lot in my personal life," she said. "The reoccurring theme was I was allowing people to get under my skin. So I wrote that from a place of knowing that there was so many different experiences that will continue to happen to me in my life where I kind of have to remind myself that people can only get to you if you allow them to and you give them that access to." Carpenter elaborated after host James Corden said he felt she was skirting around the controversy. "I think it's more the fact that people will make a narrative about something always," she said. "And I think this was a really interesting song for people to kind of misinterpret and make it into something that it wasn't really supposed to be in the first place. But I've just been enjoying making music." http://instagram.com/p/CLHp-XwA7M0 Carpenter previously said on Instagram that "Skin" isn't "calling out one single person." "The song isn't calling out one single person. some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty of other experiences I've had this past year," she said.

Joshua Bassett is opening up about his decision to remove his collaboration with girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter from his upcoming EP. The 20-year-old singer and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actor shared the track list for the EP last week and his fans noticed that the collab, titled “We Both Know,” was removed from the list. Joshua told Billboard that he and Sabrina are “super excited about” the song and “it was a very much a mutual conversation about what is best right now for everybody and this whole situation.” He added, “I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make. I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter. You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [‘We Both Know’] has a better chance at a different time.” http://instagram.com/p/CLS87tDgC7R Joshua and Sabrina are the alleged subjects of his co-star Olivia Rodrigo‘s hit song “Driver’s License,” which has been on top of the Hot 100 for six weeks now. Sabrina‘s song “Skin” was seemingly a response to that track. All three of them were mentioned in an SNL skit about the song this past weekend. “First, I was in disbelief — mostly proud of Olivia,” Joshua said about the sketch. “The fact that they were using her song in a sketch, I was like, ‘This is great. This is incredible!’”
When he heard his name get called out, he said, “I was like, ‘I think I’m honored?’ They poke fun at everyone and everything. That’s the point of the show. I thought it was hilarious.”
