Taylor Swift has shared her new recording of “Love Story,” the first of her efforts to re-record her first six albums following the controversial 2019 sale of her early master recordings. Listen to the song, which first appeared on Swift’s 2008 album Fearless, below. Swift announced the fully updated Fearless on Thursday, though she had previewed the re-recorded “Love Story” in early December. Fearless (Taylor’s Version), which is out April 9 and is up for pre-order in several editions, includes new recordings of six tracks Swift wrote for the album as a teenager that were never released. In a statement, Swift called Fearless (Taylor’s Version) “the whole story, the entire vivid picture… the entire dreamscape that is my fearless album.” After Scooter Braun bought and later re-sold the master recordings of Swift’s first six albums, Swift said she would re-record them as a way to regain control of her work. Swift released her newest record evermore on a day’s notice in December, less than six months after releasing folklore in the same fashion. Taylor Swift's original background vocalist is feeling grateful to have worked with the artist on her career-changing song "Love Story" for a second time. Swift dropped the re-recording of her popular track on Friday, featuring background vocals from Caitlin Evanson, who also sang on Swift's original recording of the song. Shortly after the re-recording was released, Evanson tweeted at Swift, 31, to express her appreciation for the opportunity to sing on the updated track. "@taylorswift13, I'm so honored to again, be a part of this magic we made so long ago. Thanks a million," Evanson wrote. "Can't stop listening to Love Story (Taylor's Version!) #lovestorytaylorsversion #ownedbytaylorswift" According to the credits on "Love Story (Taylor's Version)," Evanson is listed as an "associated performer, background vocalist." On Thursday, Swift, 31, surprised fans by announcing the imminent drop of the re-recording, sharing that it would be released at midnight. The superstar first teased a cut of her new version of "Love Story" back in December via longtime friend Ryan Reynolds' Match ad.

While the new version is not wildly different from its original, the difference is still clear and the passion behind it palpable. It marks the first step toward 31-year-old Swift reclaiming ownership of her sophomore album Fearless, which was initially released in 2008 under her former label Big Machine Records. The singer-songwriter dropped the news on Thursday morning that she had completed recording “Fearless (Taylor’s Version).” In true Swift form, she left a clue in her announcement, capping up random letters that spell out “April Ninth.” The album has an impressive 26-song list, including anthems “Fifteen,” “You Belong With Me,” and “Forever & Always,” that collectively bring back the spirit of teenage love and nostalgia which first captured the hearts of Swifties, her devoted fan base. There are also six never-before-heard tracks on the album. “I’ve decided to add songs from the vault, which are songs that almost made the original ‘Fearless’ album,” Swift wrote in her announcement. “I’ve now gone back and recorded those, so that everyone will be able to hear, not only the songs that made the album, but the songs that almost made it. The full picture.” Swift explained that the previously unreleased songs were written when she was between the ages of 16 and 18. Songs that she “absolutely adored” and had “killed [her] to leave behind.” “I’ve decided I want you to have the whole story, see the entire vivid picture, and let you into the entire dreamscape that is my ‘Fearless’ album,” she added. Re-recording Fearless is significant because it was the first time Swift pushed the boundaries of what type of artist she was. She originally came on the scene as a country singer-songwriter, but Fearless was considered more of a pop album. As Swift matured in her artistry, she didn’t allow herself to be typecast.

Taylor Swift's experiment with her old songs is proving to be fruitful out of the gate -- the early numbers are in for the first song of the big batch ahead of her, and they're not too shabby.
Billboard documented the single-day download and radio play data that has come in since Taylor released "Love Story (Taylor's Version)" on Friday ... the initial, re-recorded mega-hit track of hers in what could be a long line of re-releases she's vowed to distribute anew.
Based on the figures, it's doing alright ... especially compared to the OG on the same day (Feb. 12, 2021). Billboard reports MRC Data for Feb. 12 show Taylor's new version got downloaded some 10,000 times, compared to just 200 downloads for the 2008 track.
There's also a radio play element here that has yet to bear out fully -- Billboard notes that Taylor's new 'Love Story' (which sounds virtually identical to the old one) has not gotten a big push by her team for it to be played on radio ... but a handful of stations across the country did blast it on Friday -- and even those numbers are greater than the OG's same-day stats.
"Love Story (Taylor's Version)" got 144 radio plays among 89 stations on Friday, compared to the original ... which got just 67 plays on Friday. 2008's "Love Story" is still king (for now) -- as we know, it sky-rocketed in the charts over time -- so Tay-Tay's got a ways to go before her new take comes close. Still, pretty promising early signs of what's to come.
