Babymetal are getting their own animated series! The three metal vixens will star in a shortform digital series produced by Warner Bros. where they defend the metal genre after it comes under attack. The Metal Resistance theme will soon transcend the world of audio and live performance. Fresh after performing for over 110,000 fans over two nights at Japan’s legendary Tokyo Dome, Babymetal and Warner Bros. have struck a deal to animate Su-Metal, YuiMetal and MoaMetal for an online cartoon. Babymetal mastermind KobaMetal has also signed on to produce the series. Warner will utilize its Blue Ribbon digital studio and team with Japan’s Amuse Inc. to bring this vision to life. “The action-adventure will take viewers inside the magical world of heavy metal music as it comes under attack, and one lonely god, Kitsune, forms the warrior band Babymetal to save the day. In the series, Su-Metal, YuiMetal and MoaMetal join together to ultimately redefine the genre,” Warner Bros. writes. “The series will also feature new live-action performances from the group, who will enter the animated world through a secret portal.” Warner Bros. president Sam Register states, “Babymetal have to be seen to be believed — a mind-blowing, fun combination of pop vocals, heavy metal music and dance choreography brought to life by three incredibly talented teenage stars. We are huge fans here at Blue Ribbon Content and are extremely excited to help bring the Babymetal phenomenon to U.S. audiences through this upcoming digital series.”

It could have been cheap novelty, but the music stayed true to the genre, reminding headbangers that metal can be fun. 'I think it's not only Babymetal's sound but also the fact that we dance to metal that represents a new way of expressing this genre of music,' explains Moametal. 'I guess the British audience accepted us for being refreshing and interesting.' To truly understand Babymetal you also need to understand the concept of Japanese idol bands. A quintessentially Japanese phenomenon, these are huge multimember manufactured pop acts – the nearest equivalent in the UK would be The Spice Girls or S Club 7, but on a much larger scale. The most successful, AKB48, currently hold the Guinness World Record for Largest Pop Group with over 130 members who perform nightly at their own theatre, with sales of over $200 million in their home country. They are sold as accessible, super sweet, cute (or 'kawaii') role models who usually sing upbeat pop, as well as modelling and acting across multiple platforms. However Babymetal broke the mould, adding grinding guitars and pounding blast beats to the formula. Metal fans have embraced the madness and Babymetal have appeared on the cover of Metal Hammer, collaborated with DragonForce and Rob Halford (Judas Priest), played Reading and Leeds, Sonisphere and Download, and were the first Japanese act to headline Wembley Arena in London. In Japan they are beyond huge, selling out two nights at the 55,000 capacity Tokyo Dome and starring in their own upcoming animated series. Now Babymetal are making their Scottish debut supporting funk rock veterans The Red Hot Chili Peppers on their UK arena tour. 'We were able to see their show for the first time at Fuji Rock Festival in the end of July in Japan this year,' adds Yuimetal. 'Their music and live performance was so awesome!! I'm looking forward to learn[ing] a lot from them when touring with them.'

Last night, The Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked off their UK arena tour with BABYMETAL at The O2 in London. The show in the capital was the first night of a lengthy nine-date crawl of arenas around the UK and Ireland, showcasing their huge 2016 album ‘The Getaway’ along with their catalogue of classics and fan favourites. Highlights included the staples of ‘Can’t Stop’, ‘Under The Bridge’, ‘Otherside’, ‘Californication’, ‘Give It Away’ and ‘By The Way’ – as well as throwing in a cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Higher Ground’.

Japanese pop-metal sensation BABYMETAL was joined by a very special guest during their last show supporting RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS at the O2 Arena on December 18 — none other than RHCP drummer Chad Smith! After a high-octane performance of "Gimme Chocolate!!", BABYMETAL exited the stage and darkness quickly descended upon the arena. Unnoticed by the crowd, Chad Smith replaced BABYMETAL drummer Hideki Aoyama behind the kit and performed a spectacular drum solo, disguised as a member of the Kami Band wearing corpse paint and white clothing.

2016 is near its end, but let’s not forget how huge of a year it’s been for Japanese metal/J-pop group Babymetal: They released their (surprisingly good) sophomore album METAL RESISTANCE in April, performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, became playable characters in Super Mario Maker, got their own web series, and covered two Judas Priest songs with the band’s own Rob Halford. They’ve undoubtedly carved out a spot for themselves in the metal and broader music communities, and they’ve even earned the favor of one of the most legendary rock bands of all time, as it was just announced that Babymetal is going on tour with Guns N’ Roses (via Fuse). GnR took to Twitter yesterday to announce that they are adding two new dates to their string of now-five Japanese shows, and for four of them, Babymetal will serve as opening act. Babymetal won’t be opening for Guns N’ Roses stateside, unfortunately, so you best dig out your passport and see what Airbnb has in Japan if this is a must-attend event for you.
