With a new album called Spaceman, it’s not surprising Nick Jonas is building a cosmic, other world with his latest music videos. The newest, for his song “This is Heaven,” jumps off from “Spaceman’s” ending but situates Jonas as a scriptwriter behind the scenes. The visual opens on the pop star hunched over a typewriter, seemingly trying to bring his vision to life on paper. “This song means so much to me, to this album. I feel like it’s sort of the center point, and kind of the thing that propels us into the theme of commitment, and honestly [it’s] just one of my favorites,” Jonas shared on his Instagram. While falling in sequence with the concept of “Spaceman,” the song/video gives the storyline a very “different environment” and focuses in on “what happens when you are able to escape in whatever way is right for you. For some people that’s a good book, video games, a nice meal, dinner… whatever it is, but this is about that escapism feeling.” In conversation with Apple Music, Jonas expanded on his love of the song. “[This song is] about my personal experience with faith and religion. I believe in a lot of things, and one of the things I believe is that love is a high, important power that connects us all,” he said. “When you’re in that state of euphoria and connection with your person, it should feel like heaven. I wanted to write a song that embodied that. Also, naturally, heaven would have sax solos.” The video, directed by Daniel Broadley (Mark Hoppus, Don Broco), spans across Windsor, Southhampton, and Windsor. Once Jonas steps away from his script, the sequence cuts away, as well, flipping between footage of Jonas performing inside the beautiful St. John’s Church in Hyde Park, where he is joined by the London Community Gospel Choir. Anthony Williams leads the accompaniment, featuring David Angol on sax, Aaron Graham on drums, and Leiah Fournier on keys.

In a video for the title track of his new album Spaceman, Nick Jonas beams in from outer space. Now, he's beaming in from heaven. The brand-new music video for "This Is Heaven," released Wednesday afternoon (March 17), shows Jonas performing in church, backed by a choir, as the sun streaks in through stained-glass windows. In another scene, he's in front of a giant control panel, seemingly back to his lonely "Spaceman" character. Then he truly finds happiness not up in that space observation deck, but outdoors, as he's seen running through the woods, surrounded by sky-high trees, and he can finally breathe. The visual, directed by Daniel Broadley, was shot in England, and Jonas is joined by the London Community Gospel Choir, led by Anthony Williams, in St. John's Church in London's Hyde Park for the gorgeous performance scenes. Jonas released his most recent solo album, Spaceman, on Friday. Over the weekend, he unleashed a deluxe edition that includes a new song featuring the Jonas Brothers.

Nick Jonas Completes His Team After Awari Sings SWV's "Weak" - The Voice Blind Auditions 2021 Awari performs "Weak" during The Voice Blind Auditions. Jonas is rich, famous, hyper-visible—a member of a class whose behavior over the past year has arched many an eyebrow. In the throes of pandemic, celebrities have flubbed efforts to boost morale, and failed to disguise the ways that wealth—and the healthcare, real estate, mobility, etc. that it brings—mitigated the need to modify their lifestyles in the interest of public health. Still, relatability is a virtue in pop music, so Jonas approached Spaceman with an eye to shared experience. When, on the album’s first single and title track, he sings, “Mask off minute I get home/All safe now that I’m alone,” it’s clear that he’s not speaking metaphorically. Spaceman is divided into neat quarters, each with a distinct theme: distance, indulgence, euphoria, and commitment. Jonas has waxed poetic about the significance of the chapters, pegging each to the broader pandemic experience. The first three tracks explore the emotional toll of social isolation; the next two, the coping mechanisms he employed to deal with it. The “euphoria” segment proposes an antidote to the pain, and the final chapter, “commitment,” doubles down on that antidote (spoiler: it’s love). This is all a bit self-help-y. It also scans as an after-the-fact effort to make the album more topical, when its material is actually quite straightforward, and doesn’t warrant this sort of explanation. Using Nick’s liner notes to decode Spaceman feels a bit like cheating on the Monday crossword.
