Demi Lovato released her album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over on April 2, and Ariana Grande collaborated with Lovato on the track “Met Him Last Night.” The album reflects on Lovato’s experience after a drug overdose in 2018 and has received acclaim from critics. While promoting Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over, Lovato revealed that Grande wrote “Met Him Last Night” specifically for her. Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande are close friends To promote the album, Lovato took part in an interview with SiriusXM. During the interview, Lovato was asked how she managed to get Grande to participate on the record. “So honestly, we weren’t in the studio together and I didn’t approach her with that,” Lovato said. “I’d actually played her my album, or what had been done of it in 2019. And one of those songs was ‘Dancing With the Devil.'” Lovato continued, “So she knew about the story behind it and everything, and she’s a close friend of mine so she knew my story pretty well.” Lovato went on to explain that Grande ended up writing “Met Him Last Night” to be on Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. “She started writing this song. She actually thought about me,” said Lovato. “And she started, she wrote the song with me in mind and then she played it for me.” After Grande played the song for her, Lovato asked Grande to sing it with her. “I was like ‘I love it like you should just stay on the track.’ And she was like ‘No, no I’ll be like mystery harmony lady.’ And I was like ‘The world would love to hear us together like we should do that,'” Lovato said on SiriusXM.

Singer Demi Lovato released her latest album in April 2021. On it, she’s joined by a handful of notable artists, including Grammy-winner Ariana Grande. Grande co-wrote and sang on the track “Met Him Last Night.” What is the song about, according to Lovato?
Lovato and Grande first met years ago. While the former rose to prominence in the ’00s as a Disney Channel star, the latter became famous a few years later for starring in shows on its rival network, Nickelodeon. Both switched their focus to music and have attended many of the same industry events.
After they were spotted at the 2015 American Music Awards posing for photos with Grande’s brother Frankie Grande and Lovato’s then-friend Nick Jonas, the pair began hanging out. In 2019, Grande told a Twitter user who doubted the legitimacy of their friendship, “I talk to her everyday u psycho.”
The “Positions” singer wasn’t exaggerating when she emphasized their closeness. Fans learned that in 2019 when Lovato signed with Grande’s manager, Scooter Braun. A few months later, the three celebrated Lovato’s birthday on Grande’s Sweetener World Tour. Later, it was revealed that Grande was instrumental in getting Lovato signed.
“I saw that she was scared, like, no one’s going to take me on,” Braun told the New York Times of meeting with Lovato. “I asked Ariana’s opinion and she said, let me go to coffee with her,” he continued. “And by the time she got home, she texted me: You have to take her on, this is my friend. I want to know she’s safe.”

Demi Lovato: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.
Lyndsey McKenna | April 14, 2021 A few years ago, some of us on the NPR Music team stumbled upon a copy of Demi Lovato's 2013 book, Staying Strong: 365 Days A Year. Reading Lovato's heartfelt daily reflections became a workday habit; her transparency and vulnerability made us ardent admirers who wanted nothing but the very best for Demi.
We made it our mission to get Demi to the Tiny Desk, and though the pandemic had other plans, Lovato's Tiny Desk (home) concert was worth the wait. Recorded on a sunny spring day in her Los Angeles backyard, Lovato begins with a moving rendition of "Tell Me You Love Me" from her 2017 record of the same name, accompanied by subtle, sparse keys. She continues her set with the title tracks from her recently-released studio album, Dancing With The Devil...The Art Of Starting Over. On both tracks, Lovato's voice feels stabilizing and grounding; there's a sense of clarity and purpose in its power.
When interviewed by NPR's Ailsa Chang back in 2017, Demi Lovato said, "I think I've lived a lot of life." Through both her struggles and successes, Lovato's shown all sides of herself – the confident and unapologetic star, but also the complexities of recovery – inviting us on her journey in a deeply personal way. Her intimate (home) concert feels like a natural extension of that sincerity.
