Big Red Machine is a side project for both members — The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon — but its next album makes deep use of the pair's formidable Rolodexes. How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? drops Aug. 27, and its latest single features none other than frequent Dessner and Vernon collaborator Taylor Swift. This is no mere cameo, either: It could just easily function as a standout track on either of Swift's 2020 blockbusters (folklore and evermore), both of which were co-produced by Dessner.
Here, Swift — as she so often does — stares down a relationship that's become more toxic and labor-intensive than she'd been led to expect. "Is it insensitive for me to say, 'Get your s*** together so I can love you'?" Lyrically and in structure, "Renegade" sounds considerably more like Taylor Swift (feat. Big Red Machine) than Big Red Machine (feat. Taylor Swift), not that fans of any of the artists involved are likely to complain.

On Friday, after releasing "Renegade" — her collaboration with Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner's Big Red Machine — Swift, 31, shared a collage of photos including one taken by 6-year-old James Reynolds, the daughter of her friends Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. "You wouldn't be the first renegade to need somebody 🌹," Swift captioned the post, featuring the photo of Swift looking down while wearing a white, patterned dress and holding up a colorful cloth. "Collage by @grahamtlbrtfoto. "When @aaron_Dessner came into my life, I was ushered into his world of free-flowing creativity where you don't overthink, you just make music," Swift tweeted after the song's release. "A song we wrote for his project @brmadjv (which also features Justin Vernon) is out!" While chatting with Zane Lowe on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1, Dessner opened up about the new track, which came about after he and Vernon, 40, worked with Swift on her Folklore and Evermore albums.

Could a tour be next? And has Taylor even *met* Justin Vernon yet? These questions & more, on the new Pop Shop Podcast. The release of Big Red Machine's "Renegade," featuring Taylor Swift, last week has us wondering about what might be next for the power trio of Swift, Aaron Dessner (The National) and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). After all, they've already given us two No. 1 albums -- Swift's 2020 projects Folklore and Evermore, which Dessner co-produced and Vernon sang on two duets -- and now they've delivered an earworm single with the surprisingly upbeat "Renegade," which has Taylor on lead vocals and Vernon on backup. On the latest episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith discuss some burning questions around the new song: Will this trifecta (or their respective bands) ever tour together? Or maybe we could dream of a festival lineup that includes Swift's folky collaborators one day and her pop besties the next? Who benefits the most from this working relationship? And has Taylor even met Justin yet?
