K-pop boy band BTS announced Friday that it would be canceling the world tour for its fourth album, which was originally slated to start in April 2020, amid coronavirus complications.
“Our company has worked hard to resume preparations for the BTS Map of the Soul Tour, knowing that all fans have been waiting eagerly and long for the tour,” the band's record label, Big Hit Music, said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Due to changing circumstances beyond our control, it has become difficult to resume performances at the same scale and timeline as previously planned,” the statement said. “Therefore we must announce the cancellation of the BTS Map of the Soul Tour.”
The tour was originally planned to hold its first stop in Seoul before stops in 18 countries with 39 shows.
But with the resurgence of COVID-19, those plans quickly changed and the K-pop stars instead focused on performing through virtual concerts and creating a movie, Variety reported.
BTS’s label suggested that live concerts could return in the fall, but no timeline was given.
“Once again, please allow us to offer our sincere apology to all fans who have waited for the BTS Map of the Soul Tour to resume,” Big Hit said in its statement to The Reporter. “We are working to prepare a viable schedule and performance format that can meet your expectations, and we will provide updated notices as soon as possible.”
South Korea has seen a steady increase of new COVID-19 cases over the last month. The country saw 2,152 confirmed cases on Thursday, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). The country has reported at least 1,000 or more since early July.
