North Korea’s military parade features hazmat suits and gas masks - BBC News
North Korea has held a military parade to mark the communist state's 73rd founding anniversary, but did not display any major ballistic missiles.
State media photos of the night-time parade showed marching soldiers in what appeared to be bright red hazmat suits and gas masks.
According to our correspondent this may be a sign that a special force has been created to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Leader Kim Jong-un, who looked visibly slimmer, was seen among the unmasked crowds hugging children.
On Thursday, state media also released images of fire trucks, tractors, and fireworks at the parade.
North Korea is suffering from food shortages and a deepening economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

An even more svelte-looking Kim Jong Un was the main attraction at a military parade in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, where public health workers marched in gas masks and hazmat suits in a display of force against the COVID-19 pandemic. The slimmed-down leader — who wore a pale gray suit and matching tie for the event celebrating the country’s 73rd anniversary — was all smiles as he watched the procession, which notably did not feature the usual array of ballistic missiles. “It’s striking how much healthier Kim Jong Un is looking in these photos from yesterday,” journalist and rogue regime researcher Martyn Williams tweeted. “However he is doing it—and there are theories—he looks a lot better than he did a few months ago,” he added. Ryan Chan, a correspondent for Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News, tweeted that he has “never seen Kim Jong Un in such a healthier body shape before.” Kim, who apparently did not deliver a speech during the event, was observed kissing children who presented him with flowers and waved to the crowd before taking his spot at a balcony overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, named after his grandfather who founded the nation in 1948. Kim has made headlines in recent weeks over his shrinking waistline. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has estimated that the formerly corpulent dictator has lost up to 44 pounds.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared slimmer in new photos at a military parade, renewing longstanding speculation that he's losing weight. Kim presided over a display of military force in Pyongyang early Thursday as part of celebrations for the 73rd anniversary of the country's founding. In several pictures released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, Kim seemed markedly slimmer than he had on earlier dates. His suit appeared to fit him loosely. With little independent information coming from the secretive country, its leader's weight and health - and the health of the country - have long been sources of speculation, Insider's Ryan Pickrell reported. South Korea's spy agency, the National Intelligence Service, said in November that Kim weighed about 300 pounds, which would make him severely obese.

On September 9, North Korea held its 73rd National Day Celebrations with a parade in Pyongyang. However, this year’s middle-of-the-night military parade did not feature any major weapons. Yet the spectacle grabbed eyeballs across the world as a thinner Kim Jong Un made an appearance. North Korea’s supreme leader appeared to have gone through a drastic weight loss.
