Tennis star Naomi Osaka made a dramatic debut Monday at the Met Gala. The 23-year-old stepped onto the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala wearing a striking look from Louis Vuitton. Osaka, who was a co-chair of fashion's biggest night of the year, walked with the luxury brand's Nicholas Ghesquiere and her older sister, retired tennis pro Mari Osaka, by her side. "I just really wanted to come here at least once and experience everything," the younger Osaka said. The trio arrived together because the athlete's colorful look — Vogue called it "her boldest and most thrilling style statement yet" — was something they had all helped accomplish. "We both really love fashion and love designing," Naomi said of the shared passion with her sibling. She had explained to the fashion magazine ahead of the big event that her dress had a special meaning. Beginning as a digital watercolor piece by Mari, it featured Koi fish, a reference to her Japanese heritage. "To me American means a mix of all cultures and this dress and this look represents my two backgrounds, American and Japanese," she said upon her arrival. "I believe it really celebrates who we all are and how we all play a role in the American Dream," Mari Osaka said of the dress. "It's a celebration of cultures, like America itself, a melting pot of so many special and unique elements."

Selena Gomez wasn’t at Monday’s Met Gala, but fans of the “Ice Cream” singer were — and made their presence known by chanting her name at Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin as they walked the fête’s red carpet Monday night.
Bieber — who was in an on-again-off-again relationship with Gomez beginning in their teenage years that ended in early 2018 — and Baldwin appeared to ignore the chant in a video that went viral on YouTube.
The 27-year-old “Stay” singer wore a black suit by “la masion Drew,” a nod at his streetwear label Drew House, while his model wife, 24, wore a black gown with a plunging neckline by Saint Laurent for their first Met Gala as a married couple.
Gomez, 29, last attended the event in 2018; she also attended in 2017 with her then-boyfriend, The Weeknd.
Fans of Bieber and Gomez’s relationship have had a hard time moving on: Bieber was forced to stick up for Gomez and Baldwin during an Instagram Live chat in December 2020 after a fan remarked, “[We] need to f–king bombard that s–t with Jelena and how Selena is better. Go after, please, let’s all go after her.”
