It's a princess! And Britain got to see her, wrapped in a blanket, just about nine hours after her birth. Duchess Kate of Cambridge safely delivered a baby girl at 8:34 a.m. London time Saturday. The baby arrived after less than three hours of labor. At 5:30 p.m. London time, Kensington Palace announced that mother and baby would be leaving the hospital Saturday evening local time. Shortly after, Prince William and Duchess Kate emerged from the hospital, posed and waved to the crowd and got into cars to return to Kensington Palace. Kate looked fresh and relaxed as she held her baby in her arms. She was dressed in a yellow-and-white buttercup-print shift dress by Jenny Packham. Her hair was loose and flowing. She did not look as if she had just been through labor. It was a rapid end to a long week of waiting. "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am," Kensington Palace announced by Twitter and email. "The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz." The baby, whose name has yet to be announced, arrived at 8:34am in London at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital weighing a healthy 8lbs 3oz. The couple reportedly arrived at the hospital at 6am and gave birth just 2 and a half hours later! A statement from the palace noted that ‘The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.’ “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.” The new baby is the Queen’s fifth great-grandchild, of which four are girls. She is 4th in line for the throne. Her arrival pushes Prince Harry, down to fifth in the order of succession.

The royal baby got her first royal visits. The U.K.'s as-yet-unnamed princess was greeted by her grandparents Prince Charles and Camilla, who smiled as they drove themselves through Kensington Palace gates at 11:30 a.m. Sunday. The 8-pound, 3-ounce newborn princess was first welcomed by her maternal grandmother, Carole Middleton, and her famous aunt Pippa Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, 33, gave birth to her daughter at 8:34 a.m. Saturday, with Prince William in attendance. She delivered the baby just three hours after checking into St. Mary's Hospital in London. The couple posed with their daughter for photographers before going to their Kensington Palace home, where they will come up with her name, which was not expected to be revealed Sunday. When the baby's older brother, Prince George, was born in 2013, the royal couple took two days to reveal his name, waiting until after Queen Elizabeth II had met her new great-grandson. The 89-year-old queen is expected to meet her fifth grandchild Tuesday when she leaves her private home in Sandringham to come back to Buckingham Palace. "The Duke and Duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world," a palace spokesman said.

It's a name that immediately evokes British royal history: Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, on Monday announced the name they picked for Britain's newborn princess, a choice seen as a tribute to both Prince William's parents and grandmother, the queen, as well as a link to Kate's family. Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge announced Monday they are naming their second child Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. She will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, Kensington Palace said in a news release and in tweets. As expected, they released the name after great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and other senior royals had been informed. The newest little Windsor, fourth-in-line to the throne, was born Saturday at 8:34 a.m. London time, less than three hours after her mother checked into St Mary's Hospital. She weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces. The birth of Princess Charlotte marks a new chapter for William and Kate, widely seen as the monarchy's most modern, popular couple. But the names they chose are firmly rooted in royal family history. Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, appears to be a nod to the newborn's grandfather, Prince Charles. The baby's middle names honor Queen Elizabeth II, the infant's 89-year-old great-grandmother, and the late Princess Diana, William's mother and the baby's grandmother. William and Kate introduced the baby princess to the world on Saturday evening, just 12 hours after Kate checked into St. Mary's Hospital in London to give birth. The baby weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces (3.7 kilograms). Her name was warmly welcomed on Monday by royal fans. Some were particularly pleased about the tribute to Diana, still remembered fondly by many. Diana, who died in 1997 at age 36, gave birth to William and Harry at the same London hospital where Charlotte was born.

Usually, people go to the queen to meet her but not if you're the newest little Windsor, newborn Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Queen Elizabeth II went to Kensington Palace Tuesday to see her fifth great-grandchild, little Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, three-and-a-half days after she joined the world on May 2 as the second royal baby of Prince William and Duchess Kate. Also on Tuesday, Will, like every other British parent, signed the official birth certificate for Charlotte, at Kensington Palace. She is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. Her parents are identified, as per official titles for documents: His Royal Highness, Prince William Arthur Philip Louis (his full name), Duke of Cambridge, and his occupation is Prince of the United Kingdom. She is Catherine Elizabeth (Kate's full name), Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess of the United Kingdom. (Actually, Will has another occupation, as an air-ambulance helicopter pilot, which is due to start full time on June 1 after his paternity leave ends.) The queen returned from her Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Tuesday and popped over to the sprawling palace apartment of the Cambridges to see the new baby, where she stayed for less than an hour. The queen did the same thing when Will's and Kate's son, Prince George, was born in July 2013, dropping in at the small un-air-conditioned apartment where the couple were then living. Soon after, the couple departed for the Middletons' estate in Bucklebury about 50 miles outside London. Charlotte's grandparents, including Prince Charles and Carole and Michael Middleton, visited on Sunday, a day after she was born at St. Mary's Hospital maternity Lindo Wing 15 minutes from the palace. The Cambridges are due to leave shortly, possibly as soon as Wednesday, for Norfolk, to their country home on the Sandringham estate, Anmer Hall, where they are expected to call their main residence for the time being.

After welcoming new baby Charlotte on Saturday, May 2, the couple left the Palace at around 1:45 p.m. local time in London on Wednesday. Prince William, 32, hopped into the driver's seat of a Range Rover, while Middleton, 33, took the front passenger seat, beginning their 116-mile journey to Anmer Hall in Norfolk. The Duke will drive the two-and-a-half hours to the country estate with his two young children in the backseat. This is a big trip for the 4-day-old Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge, who will be spending time with her big brother Prince George, 21 months. The Duchess gave a slight smile as she was captured by photographers leaving Kensington Palace. Looking as gorgeous as ever just a few days after giving birth, the mother of two was casually chic with her hair pulled back, a floral scarf around her neck, and classic pearl earrings dangling from her lobes. The trip comes in the midst of Prince William's paternity leave, which lasts until June 1. Middleton will spend the subsequent months off as well, bonding with her new daughter and caring for the two children with the help of a new night maternity nurse. The family of four spent a couple of days at the palace after bringing Princess Charlotte home from the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital in London. The Duke and the Duchess often escape to the stunning Anmer Hall for quality time and vacation.
