Chloe Kim is reflecting on the pressure that sudden superstardom had on her after a successful run at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang when the snowboarder was just a teenager. In a new cover interview with TIME's Sean Gregory, Kim recounts her experience returning home and embarking on a media tour after taking the gold medal in the halfpipe. According to the profile, Kim dumped the medal in a trash bin at her parents' house after the Games. "I hated life," she told TIME, explaining that she felt like she couldn't even go to restaurants in her own community after her success on the world stage without being approached. http://instagram.com/p/CY61tsvuMb1 "It makes you angry. I just wanted a day where I was left alone," she said. "And it's impossible. And I appreciate that everyone loves and supports me, but I just wish people could understand what I was going through up to that point." Recounted Kim, now 21, "Everyone was like, 'I just met her, and she's such a bitch.' I'm not a bitch. I just had the most exhausting two months of my life, and the minute I get home I'm getting hassled. I just want to get my f------ ham and cheese sandwich and go." Kim has since found resources to help her work through the challenges of life as an elite athlete, including therapy. It's been freeing, she said to TIME: "Just being able to let those things out that you just tuck in your little secret part of your heart helps a lot … I feel much more at peace now."

Chloe Kim wins back-to-back gold in snowboarding halfpipe at Winter Olympics 976 views • Feb 10, 2022 • U.S. snowboarder Chloe Kim wins gold in the women's halfpipe! She is now the first-ever back-to-back Olympic champion in the event. Chloe Kim is looking to become the first-ever back-to-back Olympic snowboarding champion in women's halfpipe. The 21-year-old U.S. snowboarding star finished in the top spot in qualifying. Kim really separates herself by being able to fly higher than any of the other women in the halfpipe. She capped off her victory at the last Olympics with back-to-back 1080-degree spins — a combination no woman had ever landed in a halfpipe. By doing so, she became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold when she claimed the PyeongChang 2018 title for Team USA as a 17-year-old. A 1080 is three full rotations in the air. She has been very secretive about her plans for this year, but she offered a small hint as to what might be coming in the halfpipe final. Spoiler alert: The holy grail of riding is to be able to execute tricks in all four directions — forward front flip, forward back flip, backward front flip (called a “cab” jump) and backward back flip. “That’s the way I want to push snowboarding is by really encouraging people to be a good all-around snowboarder and be able to spin all four ways," Kim said. "That’s my goal. I’m working on it and I’m really excited to show you guys.”
