X, formerly known as Twitter, has closed its office in Brazil over a censorship row. The social media platform said a Brazilian Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, threatened its legal representative in Brazil with arrest if it did not comply with his "censorship orders". Brazil's Supreme Court has not commented.
People in Brazil are still able to use X, billionaire Elon Musk's platform said on Saturday. Mr Moraes had ordered X accounts he has accused of spreading disinformation - many supporters of the former right-wing president Jair Bolsanaro - must be blocked while they are under investigation.
After X owner Musk criticised Mr Moraes, the judge ordered 100,000 reais ($19,774; £15,670) fines a day for any account that X reactivated, and stressed the possible liability of the company's legal representatives in Brazil if this were to happen. He also put Mr Musk under investigation for charges including the obstruction of justice.

[São Paulo Current Affairs] On the 30th, the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court ordered X (formerly Twitter), owned by American businessman Elon Musk, to suspend its services in Brazil.
The incident, which Mr. Musk rejected as "censorship" after he refused to comply with the court's order to freeze the accounts of some users, developed into an unusual situation.
Following the Supreme Court's decision, Mr. Musk posted on X one after another. ``Freedom of speech is the foundation of democracy. Unelected fake judges are destroying it for political purposes.'' "Brazil's number one source of truth will be shut down," he lamented.
The Supreme Court has previously ordered the suspension of accounts of users who posted on X and spread false information as part of an investigation into the 2022 Brazilian presidential election. They were informed that if they did not comply, they would be fined.

Donald Trump‘s on-off bromance with Elon Musk appears to be very much on.
The Presidential hopeful has said the Tesla and X owner could lead a “government efficiency commission” should Trump win the election in November.
Speaking the Economic Club in New York yesterday, he said Musk had agreed to oversee a “complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government” and would “recommendations for drastic reforms.”
Musk responded on X by writing: “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
