Some of ice skating’s biggest stars are coming together in Hawaii in November to not only entertain audiences, but to help support early childhood literacy in Hawaii, all part of an initiative by Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. Golden Moment Hawaii, part of Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation, will take place Nov. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena as Hawaii’s first professional skating show in nearly 20 years.
“We have a wonderful lineup of not only top North American skaters internationally, but also some top skaters from Japan, and to bring these two groups together here in Hawaii is very special,” Yamaguchi said at a press conference Wednesday. “It's really never been seen on the Mainland, so it'll be a special treat for Hawaii.”
In addition to Yamaguchi performing, other professional skaters include Brian Boitano, Meryl Davis, Charlie White and Yuka Sato. “Very rarely do you see all these skaters come together in one show, so we're looking forward to it,” Boitano said. “I love supporting my friend and I know that all my other peers love supporting Kristi, so we're looking forward to putting on a great show.”
In 2014, Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation partnered with Hawaii P-20 to support the state’s Title I public schools, beginning with Kalihi Kai and Linapuni Elementary Schools. As part of Golden Moment Hawaii, kindergarten students from these schools will participate in a reading incentive program, committing to reading with their parents for up to 500 minutes during October and November. Those who complete the program will get up to three tickets to attend the show.
Golden Moment will also feature select skating performances choreographed to live music by local artists, Na Leo and ManoaDNA, and the Hawaii Figure Skating Club will also perform an opening act. Daniel Dae Kim, star of “Hawaii Five-0,” will be co-hosting the Nov. 21 performance.
The following skaters will be performing:
Kristi Yamaguchi
Brian Boitano
Meryl Davis and Charlie White
Shizuka Arakawa
Katia Gordeeva
Kurt Browning
Yuka Sato
Miki Ando
Takeshi Honda
Jeremy Abbott
