Biden To Deliver Primetime Address On Gun Control 134 views Jun 3, 2022 President Biden is set to deliver a primetime address to call for passing gun control legislation after mass shootings in New York, Texas and Oklahoma. NBC's Mike Memoli has details.
The White House said Tuesday that President Biden does not support a Canada-style ban on handgun sales in the wake of a pair of mass shootings last month — the latest example of administration members having to clear up their boss’s remarks.
“We’ll leave it up to other countries to set their policy on gun ownership,” Jean-Pierre said during her regular briefing. “The president has made his position clear: The United States needs to act. As I just laid out, he supports a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and expanded background checks to keep guns out of the — dangerous hands.
“He does not support a ban on the sale of all handguns, to answer your question,” the press secretary added in response to Fox News’ Peter Doocy, who had asked: “Canada is making it impossible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in that country. Would President Biden ever consider a similar restriction on handguns here?”

US President Joe Biden urges ban on assault-style weapons – BBC News 7,872 views Jun 4, 2022 President Joe Biden has said the US should ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines to tackle the "carnage" of gun violence.
Addressing the nation after a spate of mass shootings, Mr Biden said too many places had become "killing fields".
He said if a ban was not possible the age limit for buying such weapons should at least go up from 18 to 21.
But deadlock on the issue between Republicans and Democrats in Congress means progress is seen as unlikely.
In order for any laws to pass, Republicans in the Senate need to back them, which is unlikely because they defend access to guns as a constitutional right for every American.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Rep. Chris Jacobs has announced he will not seek another term in Congress, after the Republican faced rising backlash from the right following his announcement last week that he would support new gun control measures. “It would be an incredibly divisive election for both the Republican Party and the people of the 23rd District,” Jacobs said Friday afternoon at a press conference in Buffalo. “The last thing we need is an incredibly negative half-truth filled media attack funded by millions of dollars of special interest money coming into our community around this issue of guns and gun violence and gun control.” Jacobs, a resident of suburban Buffalo, has spent the past two years representing a seat in the northwest corner of the state. Hours after new maps were released on May 21, he announced plans to run for a new district along New York’s border with Pennsylvania, which most closely resembles the seat that was recently vacated by Republican Tom Reed. In the aftermath of a shooting at a supermarket near his district, he declared he would support measures such as a ban on semiautomatic rifles and a new minimum age of 18 to purchase firearms. That quickly led to an uproar among his fellow Republicans. “I was very surprised by Congressman Jacobs’ surprise announcement,” state GOP Chair Nick Langworthy told reporters in Albany earlier this week. “I think everybody was caught very flat-footed by his adopting the Democrat position on gun control.”
