Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice comes Thursday, Oct. 8, to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre Township. Kerrigan, a two-time Olympic medalist, World Champion medalist, and US National Champion, talked with JumpStart! about the preparation for the show, and the numbers she’s most looking forward to performing:
Nancy Kerrigan: The show began after the 1994 Olympics. We were looking for a show that I could do that could become an annual thing. It just so happened that the new Boston Garden was opening and they wanted an ice show for the fall, so we thought that Halloween, which has always been a favorite for me, would be perfect. We created a big show with lasers and a coffin and all of the big stars of that era. I had a great time doing it so we decided to keep it going. I never thought that I would still be skating in it almost 20 years later!
I love Halloween and always have. It is so much fun to figure out costumes and of course, the trick or treating was always something to look forward to. Now, as a mom, I love working with my kids to come up with their outfits and get a kick out of seeing how all the kids in the neighborhood dress up.
JS: How much preparation goes into putting the tour together? What is your role as co-director? How are the routines designed?
NK: It is quite a big undertaking, as you might imagine. We have been working on it for about six months and it involves a lot of people from the skaters to the venue management to social media elements, etc. As co-director I work with Kurt Browning and Jerry Solomon — my husband and the executive producer — to come up with the storyline, the running order for the show, what characters the skaters play and how we get from one situation to the next to make it as entertaining as possible. It has been a fun but challenging project and I am looking forward to seeing how it all comes out on the ice.
The design of the routines is really a team exercise. Kurt has been leading the way on a lot of that and it has been great to work with him. He is really creative and of course, has one of the most distinctive skating styles in history so seeing his mind at work has been great for me. The real challenge comes when we get everyone on the ice... we have only a few days to teach everyone the numbers so we will be hard at work during rehearsal!
JS: What’s it like working with your fellow cast members? How many of them are brand-new to the Halloween on Ice show?
NK: I have always loved working with all of the skaters, and only a few in this year’s cast have done Halloween on Ice before so that will be interesting. When we compete it is a different environment for us so when we get to perform in an integrated show with a storyline and characters, it makes it much more enjoyable. When we put on costumes, it frees us to skate in different ways and that is always exciting to see.
JS: Is there a specific storyline this year?
NK: Yes... it involves a dream that takes me on a journey where I meet many different characters who try to convince me to join them. However, eventually I meet the king of the vampires who puts me under a spell. You’ll have to come to the show to see how it ends!
JS: Is there a particular number or routine you’re especially excited to perform?
NK: I have a few numbers that I think will be fun and entertaining for the audience. One includes four princesses and one includes vampires and a werewolf so I get to see the darker and lighter side of Halloween which should appeal to “kids of all ages.” I also am looking forward to skating with Johnny Weir. I have never skated with him before and Halloween should bring out all of his creativity, so skating with him should be really fun.
