A haze hangs over the north-eastern US with some cities, including New York, briefly reporting the worst air quality of any major city in the world.

Canada's parliament has offered an apology to the British "Home Children" - orphans and other children who sailed to the country to be used as cheap labour. At 100-years-old, George Beardshaw is one of the last surviving children shipped overseas - although around 10% of the Canadian population is said to have descended from them.
