Lawmakers in the Senate are scheduled to reconvene (5pm BST) in the countdown to an increasingly likely government shutdown if a funding agreement can't be reached by both houses of Congress before midnight on Sunday.
A US government shutdown appeared all but inevitable on Thursday night, with Republicans and Democrats deadlocked over a deal to keep the federal government open beyond the weekend.
With time running out until government funding expires at midnight on Saturday, Congress remained in a stalemate. A shutdown would halt pay cheques for millions of federal workers and military personnel, and bring the shutters down on many government services across the country.
The standoff has been driven by House Republicans, led by a hardline faction loyal to Donald Trump, that has rejected the government budget for 2024 agreed in May between Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Speaker, and President Biden.

The US government has avoided a federal shutdown after both House and Senate agreed on a short-term funding deal.
A bill ensuring funding until 17 November received overwhelming support, and was signed into law by President Joe Biden minutes before a deadline.
However, it was stripped of any new aid for Ukraine for its war against Russia - a key Democrat demand.
A government shutdown, which would place tens of thousands of federal employees on furlough without pay and suspend various government services, was due to begin at 00:01 ET (04:01 GMT) on Sunday.

(Bloomberg) -- President Biden has asked House Speaker McCarthy to approve a new budget for aid to Ukraine. The aid was left out of a bridge budget that was hastily passed to avert a U.S. government shutdown.
"I look forward to the chairman fulfilling his commitment to ensuring that Ukraine has the legislation and support it needs to protect itself from aggression and atrocities," President Biden said at the White House on the 1st. "There are an overwhelming number of Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress who support Ukraine. Let's vote," he said.

The threat of a federal government shutdown suddenly lifted late Saturday as President Joe Biden signed a temporary funding bill to keep agencies open with little time to spare after Congress rushed to approve the bipartisan deal.
The package drops aid to Ukraine, a White House priority opposed by a growing number of GOP lawmakers, but increases federal disaster assistance by $16 billion, meeting Biden’s full request. The bill funds government until Nov. 17.
