The air at the Ukrainian military recruitment office where a 30-year-old hairdresser is being interviewed is filled with anxiety. The man has no military experience and is unsure whether any of his skills would be useful. At one point, the recruiter jokingly suggests that he might be able to give everyone a nice haircut.
But the man – who asked to remain anonymous given his pending military status – is there anyway. “The time has come,” he told CNN.
Under Ukraine’s new mobilization law, which came into effect on May 18, Ukrainian men are now facing a choice: Comply and face the possibility of being sent to the frontlines, or try to evade and risk penalties and condemnation.
The hairdresser has chosen to pre-empt the choice and volunteered, becoming one of six men to be interviewed at the Da Vinci Wolves Battalion’s recruitment center in Kyiv that day. The office is housed in an ordinary residential building, hidden from the outside world. Inside though, the walls are decorated with photos and big banners showing the logo of the battalion, a drawing of three teeth-baring wolves inside a stylized Ukrainian trident. The unit’s recruitment slogan is “Everyone will fight” and the recruiter’s laptop is covered in stickers, one of them saying “Your pack is waiting for you.”

Key backers including the United States and Germany have been reluctant to permit Kyiv to strike targets in Russia out of fear that it could drag them closer to direct conflict with Moscow.
Several other defense ministers at the gathering in Brussels backed Borrell's call.
Dutch minister Kajsa Ollongren said the Netherlands had no restrictions and that she hoped "other countries that have different positions will change that".
"It is quite feasible that they have to strike also inside Russia," Ollongren said.
Estonia's Hanno Pevkur said he "truly hopes” that every country that donated weapons to Ukraine allows Kyiv to strike Russian territory.
"It cannot be normal that Russia is attacking from very deep into Ukrainian territory and the Ukrainians are fighting with one hand behind their back," he said.

(Bloomberg) -- Ukraine must be allowed to respond to a Russian missile attack and destroy the site from which it was launched, French President Emmanuel Macron insisted.
"Ukraine is actually being attacked from bases on Russian territory," Macron said on the 28th. "We need to allow Ukraine to destroy military sites from which missiles are launched, especially those that serve as bases for attacks on Ukraine."
Macron made the remarks at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Scholz at the Meseberg Palace in northern Berlin. But Mr Macron said Ukraine should not be allowed to attack other targets on Russian territory, adding: "We do not want an escalation."
