[Washington Current Affairs] In an interview broadcast on ABC TV on the 17th, Kirby, the Strategic Public Affairs Coordinator for the U.S. National Security Council (NSC), spoke about the Chinese short video posting app ``TikTok'' in the United States. The company said it did not want its use to be banned, and asked its parent company, ByteDance, a major Chinese IT company, to sell the business.
There are growing concerns in the U.S. Congress that ByteDance is under the control of the Chinese Communist Party and that there is a security risk that data flowing to China through the TikTok app could pose a security risk. The House of Representatives earlier passed a bill that would prohibit ByteDance from distributing the app unless it sells its U.S. business. The law must pass the Senate and be signed by President Biden.
Mr. Kirby stated, ``I have concerns about data security,'' and clarified that he would like ByteDance to sell the business. However, regarding the ban bill, he said, ``I urge the Senate to move quickly (to pass it).'' Mr. Biden has indicated that he supports the bill.
