The First Lady and US President Donald Trump will host the Prime Minister and Mrs Morrison of Australia to the White House this September. The dinner comes a year after Melania held a state dinner for French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife in 2018. Despite Michelle holding 13 state dinners during Barack Obama’s presidency, Australia wasn’t included.
The former First Lady hosted leaders from India, Mexico, China, Germany, South Korea, the UK, France, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Italy and Scandinavia from 2009 to 2017.
Australia hasn’t attended a state dinner in the US since 2006 under George W. Bush’s presidency with the guest of honour being John Howard.
The White House stated in their announcement: “The President and First Lady will welcome Prime Minister and Mrs Morrison of Australia to the White House on September 20, 2019, for an official visit, which will include a state dinner.

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff became a witness into the ongoing investigations whether the inaugural committee misspent funds or accepted bribes in exchange for access to top officials. She was was among the event planners who raised concerns over the excess spending in the weeks before the event in 2017. Ms Wolkoff was required to hand over a variety of information that could be evidence of any inaugural-related expenditures that were "wasteful, mismanaged, or improperly provided private benefit”. Authorities are investigating whether any of the donations for the £89million event were used to improperly benefit certain individuals or came from foreign donors. The Trump inauguration cost double the amount of Barrack Obama’s in 2009 and George W.Bush’s in 2001. Officials are particularly interested in payments being made through the inaugural committee to Trump-owned businesses, and whether there was a fair bidding process for contractors. Ms Wolkoff said she signed a nondisclosure agreement so was unable to comment on the investigation.

While she was working as a supermodel and dating Donald Trump, Melania began petitioning the US government for the right to permanently reside in the United States. Melania was granted a green card in 2001 under a program reserved for people with “extraordinary ability”, known as the “Einstein Visa”. According to the US government website, the EB-1 programme was designed for renowned academic researchers and multinational business executives. It was also reserved for those in other fields, such as Olympic athletes and Oscar-winning actors, who demonstrated “sustained national and international acclaim". Former Democratic congressman Brice Morrison told the Washington Post: “We called it the Einstein Visa.” There has been a whole lot of uncertainty over how Melania qualified for the coveted EB-1 Visa.
