First Lady Melania Trump made a quick appearance at the reception at the president’s private Palm Beach, Florida estate. She presumably put in the appearance on her husband’s behalf. He was stuck in Washington D.C., dealing with the aftermath of the failure to pass a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. Nothing is known about what the First Lady said at the reception, according to The Hill. But then Melania isn’t known for saying much — or for wanting to spend too much time in any public setting where her words, clothes, expression or body language will be dissected and analyzed for clues about what she thinks or feels about her husband, her marriage and her new life as wife of the president of the United States. Unfortunately for Mrs. Donald Trump, being the wife of the leader of the free world comes with some pretty demanding expectations, fair or not. And, thus far she has been publicly reluctant to meet a lot of them — despite headlines from two weeks ago proclaiming that she was ready to “embrace” her job as First Lady.

It is perhaps no surprise that first lady Melania Trump's first official portrait is a glamour shot. The former model's bio page on the White House website goes into great detail about her career in the field. The White House released the photo on Monday, with a simple press release stating that the photo was taken in the residence at the White House. "I am honored to serve in the role of First Lady, and look forward to working on behalf of the American people over the coming years," Trump says in the announcement. The photo has a soft focus and features a giant rock on Trump's ring finger. Reaction on Twitter included praise for her beauty and questions about whether there was too much airbrushing involved.

Her personal experience with this onslaught of ugliness gives her a unique vantage point, allowing her to speak with both empathy and authority on issues of bullying and social media cruelty. And often the best advocates for any cause are those who have experienced firsthand the social evils they seek to combat. In recent weeks, Melania has emerged as a thoughtful and courageous advocate for a safer, kinder cyberculture for children and families. At the 2017 Secretary of State's International Women of Courage Awards, she noted that "Together, we must declare that the era of allowing brutality against women and children is over." But it'll take more than speeches to change the current political climate, in which our country is so dramatically polarized, and the conversation both on and offline has become increasingly disrespectful, aggressive and even violent.

Melania Trump never wanted to be a president’s wife and the White House’s East Wing – where first ladies and their handlers have traditionally worked – is a virtual ghost town, according to a published report. Trump insiders told Vanity Fair that Melania Trump feels terribly uncomfortable with the spotlight that comes from being married to the world’s most powerful man – and is doing everything she can to stay off stage. “She never wanted this and never had any interest (in being first lady),” a Trump family insider told the magazine. A former campaign aide recalled Melania Trump, 47, once admitting that she was dead-set against Donald running for president – for fear he might actually win. A source close to the transition said it was clear from the start that Melania never intended to embrace the a traditional first lady role. Only a handful for Melania confidantes have moved into largely empty East Wing offices, VF reported.
