Former European silver medalist Adelina Sotnikova skated a clean short program to take the lead at the Russian national figure skating championships in Sochi on Wednesday and put herself in pole position for a place at February's Winter Olympics. The 17-year-old, who has won Russian nationals three times before, faultlessly performed two triple toe loops and a triple flip on her way to a score of 72.53 points. “I’m 100 per cent satisfied with the short program, I made all the elements without a hitch,” Sotnikova said. “I wasn’t worried at all, I was moving forward like a tank. Today I just came on the ice and enjoyed it.”

Grand Prix Finals runner-up Julia Lipnitskaia made a mistake on her triple lutz-triple toe loop combination and trails 2.21 points behind the leader. "I was skating last and that's my least favorite starting number," the winner of two Grand Prix events this season Lipnitskaia said. Third place went to 14-year-old Elena Radionova who received 67.76 points. She is ineligible for the Olympics on age grounds. The third-highest Olympic-eligible skater is fourth-placed Alena Leonova. #elena radionova#gracie gold#figure skater#figure skating#gp nhk 2013

Grand Prix Finals runner-up Julia Lipnitskaia, 15, skated flawlessly to set the highest score in the free skate, but was unable to make up the points she lost to Sotnikova in the short program and finished 1.96 points off the lead. Third place went to junior world champion Elena Radionova, who received 202.01 points. The 14-year-old is ineligible for the Olympics on age grounds. The third-best Olympic-eligible skater was fifth-placed Alena Leonova, the 2012 world silver medalist, who skate was marred when she landed on two hands on a triple lutz. "I know I could have done better, at least to avoid one mistake and that would have been super,” Leonova said. “I’m eager to perform for the national team and qualify for major events. I still hope that I have chances of getting to the European championships.” Elena Radionova of Russia competes in the women's free program during day two of ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2013/2014 NHK Trophy at Yoyogi National Gymnasium on November 9, 2013 in Tokyo, Japan.
