The ‘First Daughter’ of the US took to Twitter to pay tribute to Mr Johnson, who will replace Theresa May as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. But in a heartfelt message, Ivanka misspelled a crucial word, a mistake quickly jumped on by social media users. She said: “Congratulations @borisjohnson on becoming the next Prime Minister of the United Kingston.” She later deleted the message and wrote a second, error-free version. Her father, US president Donald Trump, had earlier Tweeted his own congratulations for Mr Johnson. Mr Trump said on Twitter: "Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!”

Boris Johnson has promised the "beginning of a new golden age", as he made his first Commons statement as PM. Speaking to MPs, Mr Johnson said his government would throw itself into Brexit negotiations with energy, while Michael Gove would lead on no-deal planning as a "top priority". He also said EU citizens living in the UK would have their rights protected. But Downing Street was unable to confirm if there would be any new laws to underpin the commitment. Tory MP Alberto Costa - who has campaigned for EU citizens' rights after Brexit - welcomed Mr Johnson's pledge, but said "the devil, as ever, is in the detail" and he would be "scrutinising how that guarantee comes forward". Replying to his statement in the Commons, Jeremy Corbyn said people "do not trust" the new PM to deliver on his promises.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cautioned the European Union that the Irish backstop, which he said was undemocratic, needed to be ditched if they were to strike a Brexit divorce deal.
He has repeatedly warned that if the EU continues to refuse to renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement agreed by his predecessor, Theresa May, then he will take Britain out without a deal. His biggest demand is that the most hotly contested element of the Brexit divorce agreement - the Irish border backstop - be struck out of the Withdrawal Agreement, a demand that has angered Ireland and perturbed other EU capitals.
'If we get rid of the backstop, whole and entire, then we are making a lot of progress,' Johnson said, when asked if it is was only the Irish border backstop that he wanted changed.

Boris Johnson, Britain's new prime minister, saw his parliamentary majority reduced to a single vote on Friday after his governing Conservative Party lost a special election just as it faces a tough fight over Brexit. The Tories were defeated by the opposition Liberal Democrats in a contest for the seat of Brecon and Radnorshire in Wales. Jane Dodds won 43% of the vote to 39% for Conservative Chris Davies, who was battling to retain his seat after being convicted of expenses fraud. It was the first electoral test for Johnson since he succeeded Theresa May as prime minister just over a week ago. Johnson has promised to extract the U.K. from the European Union by Oct. 31, even if it means leaving without a deal to ease the transition.
