U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe ignored the national anthem before the Women’s World Cup game against Thailand on Tuesday. Rapinoe, who is openly gay, had previously said she would never sing the national anthem again as an ‘f-you’ to President Donald Trump. She announced that she would “never put my hand over my heart” or sing the national anthem in an interview with Yahoo News in May. “I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart,” Rapinoe said in May. “I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again.” She was seen standing silently without her hand over her heart when the national anthem played on Tuesday while her teammates sang and placed their hands over their hearts, The Blaze reported. Many people took to social media in response showing both their support and disagreement with her decision.

Megan Rapinoe, a co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, has not participated in the national anthem before the side’s two games at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The 33-year-old midfielder, who is openly gay, stood silently with her arms by her sides as teammates sang the Star Spangled Banner with hands on their chests ahead of their record opening game 13-0 rout over Thailand and Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Chile. Rapinoe has faced criticism over the anthem protest, with one media outlet dubbing her “the American disgrace.” But she explained her reasons in a 2016 essay that she penned for The Players’ Tribune, after causing controversy for taking a knee before national team games in solidarity with former NFL star Colin Kaepernick.

The U.S. women's national team found itself in an unexpected battle with Spain in the Women's World Cup round of 16 on Monday and survived–but not by much.
Megan Rapinoe's two penalty kicks were all that saved the Americans against an impressive, pressing Spain side, which gave the defending champions all they could handle before bowing out of the competition with a 2-1 defeat Reims, France.
Host France awaits in the quarterfinals for the USA, which persevered in a rematch of a January friendly in which Spain did well to limit the USA before ultimately succumbing to a 1-0 defeat, thanks to a goal from Christen Press. That match was the only previous meeting between the two sides, one that U.S. manager Jill Ellis said she sought out aggressively in order to prepare the Americans for a match such as this. In the end, Spain displayed a different, more proactive and aggressive style and might feel aggrieved after a potential penalty in the dying moments of stoppage time wasn't reviewed by VAR–which did confirm the USA's second penalty of the day.
