KDDI will provide its satellite broadband service ``Starlink'' free of charge to evacuation centers and other areas affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. This project will be implemented at the request of Ishikawa Prefecture and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and KDDI will collaborate with Starlink Japan, SpaceX's Japanese subsidiary.
On the 7th, 350 Starlink terminals were brought to the Ishikawa Prefectural Office. At the evacuation center, a Wi-Fi environment will be established using Starlink, allowing users of mobile phone companies other than au to use the internet for free.
To date, KDDI has utilized Starlink for backhaul lines for in-vehicle base stations and shipboard base stations in order to restore areas for mobile phone services such as au, UQ mobile, and povo. They have also been provided to the Self-Defense Forces and electric power companies, and in addition to the recent provision to evacuation centers, approximately 700 units are now in use.
