The rankings for the team competition at the Beijing Olympics changed after Valieva was suspended for four years and had her performance disqualified. Valieva's ranking points were invalidated, so the second-place United States won the gold medal and the third-place Japan won the silver medal. On the other hand, the first place Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) was not disqualified and won the bronze medal. Fourth-place Canada remains in fourth place, just one point short.
Richard Pound, who has served as the Director-General of WADA, objected to this decision. ``Former WADA chief Pound said Canada should win the team bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.'' Pound added, ``Obviously there was a mistake. There should be no need to litigate this. An error has been made and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible.'' "It will get worse," he said.
Skating Canada has already released a statement saying, ``We are extremely disappointed in the ISU's position regarding the awarding of medals in team competitions,'' but the controversy is likely to continue.
