Grace VanderWaal performed in the 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday. A frontrunner all season long, VanderWaal won “AGT” this past September. She subsequently signed a record deal with Columbia Records. Now the singer’s debut EP, called Perfectly Imperfect, will be released on December 2. The five-track compilation consists of all original material, including her “America’s Got Talent” breakout song, “I Don’t Know My Name.” VanderWaal’s victory led to appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” But the annual Thanksgiving parade marks her biggest performance yet with around 50 million viewers expected to tune in to NBC’s live broadcast. On Wednesday, the songstress enthusiastically tweeted, “Getting ready for the 90th annual #MacysThanksgivingDayParade I AM SO EXCITED!!”

Grace VanderWaal performed “I Don’t Know My Name” on the “Today” show on Monday. VanderWaal’s appearance on the morning show comes two months after she won season 11 of “America’s Got Talent.” The 12-year-old now has a record deal, and will be releasing her first EP next month. And just days ago, VanderWaal performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I am now homeschooled,” VanderWaal explained to the co-hosts. “I’m stuck in sixth grade. I can’t get it out of my mind.”

Grace VanderWaal broke onto the music scene by stealing viewers’ hearts performing only original music as the eventual winner of America’s Got Talent Season 11. With the release of her debut EP Perfectly Imperfect Friday (Dec. 2) and video for her new folk-pop single “Clay,” it’s abundantly clear VanderWaal isn’t done stealing hearts yet. The visuals for “Clay” are as sweet and enticing as the understated piano intro, creating a foil to her raspy, soft vocals as they pick up and grow stronger entering the chorus. With her songwriting prowess and vocals reminiscent of a Taylor Swift-Regina Spektor hybrid, it’s hard to believe VanderWaal is a mere 12 years old. “I had the most amazing time in the studio and I really hope everyone enjoys the EP as much as I enjoyed making it," VanderWaal said. "I want to thank everyone who supported me on AGT, without you I wouldn’t be where I am today and I really can't thank you enough. This is only the beginning.”

The EP features VanderWaal’s AGT audition song “I Don’t Know My Name” — the same one that made judge Howie Mandel hit the golden buzzer and send her all the way to the live shows. The inclusion of the song brings the whole experience full circle for VanderWaal. “We told everyone that I was releasing my EP the same day I auditioned for America’s Got Talent last year. I always wonder what I would think if I could go back and tell myself that I’m doing this right now.” For the EP’s name, the young singer took a cue from one of her favorite music acts. “I was really inspired by Ingrid Michelson‘s album name It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense,” she says. “[My title] became what it is because it’s about loving your flaws.” Becoming a professional recording artist isn’t the only way her life’s changed since winning: she also had to transfer to online school. “I don’t like online school—it’s really hard!” she admits. “I think it’s because I’m not used to it yet. I miss school a lot, though. It’s like you hate it until you don’t have it. I absolutely hated going to school and now that I don’t have it, I realized that I loved not liking school.”

Grace VanderWaal won America's Got Talent, performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and recorded an entire EP in only a matter of weeks (the latter in only a matter of days). It would seem like an impossible résumé of accomplishments for anyone — but the self-taught singer-songwriter has done all of this by age 12. "Miracles can happen" was what she said on her first audition at AGT, when Simon Cowell asked if she really thought she could win the competition. It turns out, she was right. Her debut EP, Perfectly Imperfect, redefines her from contestant to recording artist all her own. In five tracks, Grace takes us through an array of emotions – and styles – beginning with "I Don't Know My Name," the original song that introduced Grace as an artist at her very first audition, all the way through tracks like "Gossip Girl," the first song she recorded. She told Teen Vogue that it was also the "funnest, because we really messed around with a bunch of different genres and synthesizers." The EP takes you through Grace's range, touching on issues that are all-too-well-known for young people, as well as soul-stokingly beautiful medleys that almost anyone could relate to. But that's Grace for you: a jack of all trades, and a master of them, too.
